Brake disc quality??

I am looking to change my discs soon and have noticed a considerable difference in price between brands.

For example, I could get a cheapy pair of Mtec for £88 for the fronts or pay £232 for EBC Grooved discs instead.

Anyone know from experience if its a case of "you get what you pay for" and that there is a big difference in quality/noise/life of disc??

I've read that Mtec tend to warp but hard to say if that's always the case?

Question, will you use these on track of not ? Occasional heavy use the Mtec's are fine but mine did warp on an older BMW I had. My current setup has EBC discs and I've had no issues yet. Done 11,000 miles with some serious heavy use from time to time. I've had the fronts glowing and didn't get any warping.

The cheaper discs will be cast from a cheaper steel and to less stringent quality standards, before parting with your cash take a look at the discs edge , are the two halves even in thickness and consistent in thickness if you rotate the disc, you often find one side thinner in sections than the other and a sure sign of poor casting is big scallops machined out of the edge to balance it.

Expensive discs are expensive for a reason, but, if your just using it on the road then the cheaper discs are fine, just have a look at a few before you buy a set and pick the ones with the most consistent casting.

I've had mtec drilled and grooved discs on mine (Road use only) for a good while now and they're perfectly fine for the occasional B road blast. Never once felt my life was in danger due to them.

My new discs wont be getting any track action but they will regularly get fast road use and braking from high speed.

I am thinking at the moment that although much pricier, the EBC slotted discs will be in a different league to the Mtec, and worth paying extra for.

Joycey- that's some serious heat in those discs!!

Interesting that OEM disc haven't been mentioned. Have always fitted OEM CSL's to mine Are the others really that bad? :?

No need to pay those sort of prices, I use Pagid discs from ECP and the quality looks just fine for a fraction of the EBC price. Slotted may have a small benefit in the extreme but will also wear the pads faster.

only problem with pagid's that they made of cheese  mine lasted half day on the track until they wrapped badly .

Not a problem when you aren't tracking it as stated by the OP. :)

I also use my car for fast road use and haven't had a problem, hence no need to pay more for the intended use.

I had mtec discs on my last 3/4 cars never had a problem using the car for road use. Using the brakes hard. Think there great value for money. Don't think they'll be much difference between mentioned discs, apart from price.

All this talk of warping are you guys actually sure you had a warped disk as modern disks are really quite hard to warp.
Most people claim their disks are warped when in fact they just had deposit build up on then due to the pads.

Replaced mine with MTec and Mintex pads. I use my brakes HARD and not had a problem in the 4,000 odd miles since fitting. A few years back I shelled out around £250 on some EBC slotted & dimpled discs and greenstuff pads for my ML, they were a pile of the steaming brown stuff...

I recently replaced my rears with ATE discs and textar ceramic pads. Seem pretty good for road work. I also read loads of good and bad reviews for EBC so steered clear of them.

Spot on - You only have to read the boards of the quality disk makers and disk rarely (read almost never) warp. Almost entirely due to pads deposits or other suspension/fitting issues.
Example here: http://www.stoptech.com/technical-support/technical-white-papers/-warped-brake-disc-and-other-myths
or here: http://www.mossmotors.com/SiteGraphics/Pages/brake_discs.html

In terms of disks. Of course no cheaper make is going to kill you, but you do get what you pay for from poor castings, poorer machining and balancing and risk of vibration and other issues

Biggest problem with discs is usually the person behind the steering wheel , not bringing things up to temp and not letting them cool off and - or getting them hot and sitting with their foot on the brake or the handbrake on .
Treat them with a bit respect and most brakes will be fine .

I'll add "where possible " then  keeps things right , though if your overheating brakes on the road you maybe need to take a look at your driving , maybe your brakes are trying to tell you something :D
