Brake Caliper Refurb

Im thinking of doing mine as im replacing F+R discs and pads. The calipers are currently that unique BMW rusty colour and whilst they should not take to much elbow grease to get ready for painting Im a bit stumped for what to use paint wise.

Im not keen on a spray paint like Foliatec as they sometimes dry funnt plus overspray alert

So what are the recommendations? Hammerite?

Help and advice appreciated, and yes I did a search and trawled through lots of posts so if your gonna use this as an answer

Halfords do calliper spray paint. If you're going to do them in situ then mask off the entire wing and suspension. It is very simple :)

The calipers need to be completely clean and grease free, I would use a specialist Brake caliper paint and use a brush. This paint needs to be heated (by using the brakes) to set properly so be careful with it initially. I've used Halfords caliper paint and a two part epoxy paint - the Halfords stuff is so much easier.

Andi.

I've used smoothrite in various colours on my last 3 cars and proper caliper paint on 1. The smoothrite was just as good if not better due to quicker drying time.

I did next to nothing in terms of prep in every case. Just gave the calipers a quick clean with a proper brake cleaner. First time I did the job I set out with a wire brush but it seemed like bloody hard work. The results have always been very good with 2 coats of smoothrite or hammerite smooth if that's what it's called.

I used Hammerite Smooth and a paint brush. Very simple. Looks great IMHO.

+1 exactly what I used on my previous car, gives a great finish that lasts too

+2 I removed the caliper & pads and seperated the two parts but left the piston side connected and hanging from some wire. Cleaned them up with a small wire brush & lots of Wynn's brake cleaner and gave them two coats of smooth hammerite. The finish was really nice and it seems to be lasting pretty well - the brake dust washes off really easily.

Recently painted mine with hammerite.

Done all my previous cars the same way.. Just clear them, maybe a light rub with sand paper, and 3 coats of paint, leaving 15 mins between coats.

Allow 24 hours to harden. Takes about an hour per side.

I have used hammerite and halfords calliper paint both have given good results. If I had to pick I'd use hamerite mainly because it seems to dry so quickly as mentioned above.

Hammerite will do the job :) But when it warms up it will get tacky again and brake dust will bed in over time giving a dull finish. It needs to go off properly which is what proper calliper paint will do :) I used VHT paint on my Evo's brakes when i re-furbed them as the temperatures they were getting to was mad.
