Brake Caliper rebuild

My car has 50k miles now and wanted to get the brakes serviced, the discs and pads were just done however I didn't think to get the calipers rebuilt at the time. Mine is an 07 car so coming up to 9 years old with only fluid change and one set of discs and pads. Has anyone had theirs done? rough price?

My o/s caliper is the original 150,000 mile one.

However, my n/s one seized at about 90,000 miles and was replaced under warranty.

I would not waste my money on a caliper rebuild if you don't need it. As they say "if it ain't broke why fix it?!"

I don't believe this to be a waste of money. preventive maintenance is always better than waiting for failure. I have new discs and pads so want them to wear equally. All my bikes and cars get the same treatment.

The problem is brake calipers don't fail at certain a age mileage. There's plenty of cars out there far older and higher miles that are still on original calipers and working fine. Vice versa there's also a lot of newer stuff that's had to have new calipers etc.
I honestly don't think they are generally regarded to be in the preventive maintenance camp so to speak.
But its your car so I respect that's what you want to do

Indeed it's more the state of the caliper than the age or the mileage.

But it obviously cant hurt to rebuild. But with new caliper prices being very low (on ebay/amazon etc, not dealer prices), it might be cheaper to get a new one if you're paying someone to do the work.

And for the looks I'd paint them. New calipers may look shiney, but their coating (mostly nickel I think) is very thin, so after a year they'll be black and rusty as every other caliper.

The best thing you can do for your calipers is to change the fluid every 2 years - this prevents internal corrosion that can lead to dragging or seized pistons. As long as the rubber dust seals aren't torn the calipers will go for a long time.

The next best thing is caliper paste or copper slip on the sliding interfaces.

And the next best thing after that is regular use of the car.

A preemptive rebuild is a waste of money IMHO.

Should have done it when they were off,if your doing it yourself that is. Unless theres a problem with the brakes at the moment I cant see the point of paying somebody to do it at this point. Do it at the next pad change.
