brake caliper pin maintenance

I would like to clean and regrease my brake caliper pins that fit into the caliper carriers. I would rather not completely disassemble the brake and pads. I am pretty sure from memory there is a removable dust cap on the rear of the rubber pin guide and if removed the pins have an internal hex that allows them to be screwed into the carrier.

Has anyone any experience of removing the pins with brake calipers in situ, cleaning, greasing and reassembling?

It’s probably easier/quicker to drop the pads out first & then pull the sliding part from the pins?
They seem well covered with the rubber boots & every time I’ve checked they’ve always been well lubricated & clean
