brake brass bushes for pins

It annoys me that in my experience single piston brake pads always wear more on the piston pad than the fixed pad. I think one of the reasons is the guide pin that holds the caliper onto the caliper carrier suffers from a lot of friction in the rubber bush that supports it.

For some time I have been considering replacing the pins and rubber bushes with brass bushes and matching pins. But I have heard mixed views on these too from "big improvement in braking and even pad wear" to "didn't fit well and caused more friction". I am also unsure how much ongoing maintenance is required as they go need greasing.

Has anyone done this mod? Does it work well? how frequently do they need to be greased?

I'm sure it's a worthwhile mod for track use where you will be removing and cleaning brakes on a regular basis, but the mating between high nickle steel pins and brass bushes isn't ideal and will be prone to accelerated corrosion in road use. Could also be noisy I'd imagine.

Thanks, I have some reservations, I will probably clean and regrease the existing pins

I've put brass bushings onto my Z3 MC over 12 years ago and Z4 MC about 7 years ago and I use high-temperature copper grease on them. It's an easy enough job to fit the bushings with a pair of circlip pliers. The solid bushings certainly improve the brake feel because there's no movement of the callipers which in turn gives level pad wear on the face of both pads.

It's also an easy enough job to remove the pins individually and reapply a smear of copper grease as and when you feel it's required.

It's a great cheap mod and if you're not happy after trying them it would be no big deal in refitting the OEM bushes you removed.

Here's my thread on this topic:
