Braided Brake Lines, Run Flats, Oil

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to have a read of this thread.

I'm a new and very proud owner of 03 53 3.0ltr with lots of added toys. 8) However I have 3 initial queries to which help/guidence/advice would be appreciated

1) Braided Brake Lines - Can anyone recommend a brand for me to look at? I've seen a few but the kits vary. I'm fairly handy, so have replaced brakes etc on my old 5 series but does anyone know if the brake system on the z4 has to bled under pressure or can it be done the old fashioned way?

2) Run Flats - I've got the lovely looking 18" 5 Spoke rims and after my upcoming track day this sunday :driving: I'm probably going to need some new rears. Are Run Flats really needed or do folk survive with normal tyres and use the wheel sealant kits? Just thinking I can buy better tyre's however I do use the car everyday.

3) Oil - I've always been told that it doesn't matter which brand of oil you use in a car as long as you use the right grade. I'm using the right grade but I've owned the car for 8 weeks and gone through 1.5 ltrs so far which feels a little excessive. Is this excessive? or does the 3.0 just use that much? Just for note I'm not driving the car hard and there aren't any oil leaks that I can find.

Thanks again everyone and I look forward to reading your responses.

Welcome Seal3.0

1) Bleed them the old way
2) Many of us converted to non RFT's - lots of threads on it. Better ride, cheaper, etc.
2) Using way too much oil (well depending on how far you drove in 8 weeks) I rarely if ever need top ups between 7500 /12 month changes on a 2003 3.0

Welcome along Seal.

As CJ says above,
Main tyres of choice on here are Falken 452 Or Vreds, but alot have their own personal preferences on makes etc.
As for the oil, that is a hell of a lot to have gone through in 8 weeks, one thought I had was maybe it was getting to top up stage when you bought it, but if it is continuing to burn alot then you really need to get that checked out.

Oh and when joining and posting on the forum for the first time without posting pics of your car, it is mandatory that you get this smilie

:worthless:

Hey folks,

Thanks for the welcomes and responses.

1)brake lines - good to know I can do this myself! Happy days
2)tyres - again thanks! Easy decision
3) oil - I've talked to my local BMW Indy and they've said a 1 ltr per 1k miles is about right. I've done 1.8k so I could be alright but the Indy is checking it over on Saturday before I track it sunday. Shall keep my eye on it now though. So thanks

Apologies for not posting pic's. I wasn't aware of the protocol. I haven't taken any yet so I'll post some early next week as I'll have some taken at the track! ;)

Thanks again folks!

Hello and welcome

Braided brake hoses - I fitted he hel kit

I like them, good quality

However there are 6 hoses in total, 1 on each front well and 2 on each back wheel

You only get 4 braided hoses in the set tho, but looking at other sets same deal

I too fitted HEL braided hoses.Swap to 5.1 fliud at the same time, well worth it. I run mine of Goodyear F1 asymetricals and love them. Do an oil change, very easy to do yourself, the filter is a paper only job, and make sure you put in castrol edge,my 2003 3.0 uses about a litre in 15,000 miles.
