Boxster v mc/m

I have 2 911's..Both 996's..

A C2 Cab and a C2 coupe... I didnt like anything they did to be honest..They felt ponderous,lacking in power and shoddy in build quality..

The handling was good,but the road had to be great underneath it to exploit the handling,both mine suffered from understeer the cab having 19" wheels,on the coupe 18"..

The whole ownership scenario was tainted with paranoia for me...And things going wrong ALL the time...Window regs,door seals,interior fans,AC condensors,water pump,exhausts splitting and rotting the studs in the head..(£2000 job)...

Both cars under 60k miles when owned..

I would never have another,well maybe...But for the price they cost they are very overated IMHO..

The late 997 is supposed to be better,and i have only been a passenger in one.... I did feel very similar with a better trim level if im honest.
 
Whats a boxster like on roughish back roads ? If its able to cope with uneven surfaces it must have softer suspension set up than the mc/m . I love the way the mc bangs over horrible back roads just like a track/race car would !
 
I had the first generation s for a couple of years... The suspension balance is superb for driving on normal roads, not as much power but it just felt spot on at the time... Flat 6 with the sport exhaust and right tyres made it a great car to be in.. Boot up front and to the rear and the fact it looked spot on in my eyes. Mine was silver with metropol blue leather and clear lights... But they don't wear we'll and suffer from disc, rms, radiator, intermediate shaft, water pumps, leaks, window motors, battery, throttle pedal, and main dealer robbing problems...
 
Very different car's so worth to try them both.

There is no getting away from, it that either Boxter or Cayman are a more precise and engineered car than the Z4 but iot is also very true that they're not as characterfull (with all the faults that it implies :wink: ).

911"s are brilliant car, its just that most owners can't drive them for toffee! +they're a bit the "obvious choice" and very common, hence they suffer from that Ford Focus image. does not distract from the fact they are just awesome out of the boxd, base model.
 


This is what I used to drive and although the new one is a lot more powerful its a totally different machine than the Z4 is....

Haven't tried a Boxster, but imagine with adaptive damping then it can be either softer or harder depending on driving style (or whether you press the button!) - the larger the wheel the harsher the ride and 19's were a pretty common option on the 987 (if that's what floats your boat)
 
As BMW don't make a car to complete directly with the latest boxster/cayman, Z4 drivers who might want something newer but similar to the Z4 will probably go with the Boxter/Cayman. What else is there in the same league? I'm ruling the latest model Z4 out as it is rather heavy with that metal roof - competes with the SLK

I'm not a fan of the boxster or early caymans but would be tempted by the new Cayman or the previous Cayman R. BOth are of course loads of £££ which makes the Z4 M a bargain piece right now, if found in great condition

So all things considered (including price of the later better boxster or cayman), I would go with the Z4 MC/MR.


I don't buy the 'poor mans Porche 911 thing'. Many who say that either are on a wind up or jealous. The latest Cayman/Boxster I do rank highly from many angles. The Cayman especially is a light nimble little car vs the fat arsed 911 :) (in my opinion)
 
I think they're wonderful cars. I had a Cayman S try to keep up with me heading up the A417 hill from Cheltenham to Cirencester.

He couldn't.

we all love our zeds, with all their faults and design errors, most of us also know that the boxter and cayman are well designed and engineered with way more finnesse than the m's albeit without possibly the excitement but some dont want an old school hot rod feel such as the m or a tvr they want a more forgiving chassis which is why porsche can sell them all day long. each to their own, the most annoying and boring thing is the twats that watch top gear , know very little, have possibly never driven more that a saxo or a gangstered and drifted up scrapyard rescued 1.8 3 series bmw as that is all they could afford and then quote that clown clarkson at every opportumity that the boxter owner couldnt afford a proper porsche. FFS! who is the w*nker ? :rofl:
