Bought my Vreds today! **UPDATE**

$703.95 shipped (£454.01 to most of you) and they will be here in 7-10 days I'm told. I was given a quote of $120 (£77.39) to mount and balance them at a local shop which is higher due to the TPMS. Does this seem a little steep to you? I've never had TPMS before and I'm not sure why it necessitates more work for them...

I'll keep you updated on how I like the tires. Hopefully a much smoother ride than the RFTs that are on there now.


And I've asked this before but forgot where... but do you guys have a £ symbol on your shift+4 key instead of a $? If not... where do you get your £ symbol? I've never seen a 'British' keyboard before... :D
 
its the shift key for 3 and $ is the shift key for 4..... wot is TPMS..... i may live to regret asking that
 
chjade84, $30 a tire to mount and balance is about the norm. I'm not sure why TPM would make any difference as it's part of the valve stem and very easy to remove and reinstall.
 
TPM ? Is it not part of the hub ! A sensor that picks up the overall rolling circumference of the wheel & not the valve ? I may be wrong,but changed all my tyres from RFT's on both my BM's & was told that is what they use on my cars ! :thumbsup:

US system is different to UK/Europe...

US uses valve monitoring, UK uses revolutions of the wheel from the ABS (I Believe) sensors...

Exactly right as on US cars the TPM system has been required since 2007 models... :thumbsup:
 
In a surprising turn of events the BMW dealer will mount and balance all four of my online-purchased, non-runflats for $95...

This is 'Merica!!! Where performance trumps safety every day! :rofl:

Seriously though, I'm as surprised as anyone after reading the threads on here about places not wanting to mount anything that wasn't a run flat. I actually called the dealer about looking at my loose ignition barrel before my warranty runs out on the 14th and figured while I'm on the phone I would ask just for the hell of it. He asked if my new tires were RFTs and if my old tires were RFT and said it would be a little cheaper since they are 'standard' tires (harder to mount RFTs?).

Possibly equally shocking is the price... $35 cheaper than one of the 'big box' chain places - ironically called "Discount tire". :D
 
I was £100 to get 4 tyres moved from my old wheels to my new ones. Less than $100 is great value

Did he wear a mask while doing it, you was robbed mate :poke: .

Paid £10 a corner to get my winter tyres fitted onto my daisys, and that included balancing, which reminds me I have 4 17" Falken tyres sitting in the garage gathering dust.
 
What pressures are you Vred owners using? I've been reading a lot of mixed opinions online and it seems Vred themselves suggest pressures far too high. I've seen 30-40psi suggested...

Stock rims - 225/45/R17's.
 
So I got the tyres mounted today and they make a HUGE difference. The handling is still a bit loose as they aren't near scrubbed in yet but I no longer have to cringe every time I roll over a slight imperfection in the road! It's like advancing 150 years in tyre technology in a day!

Unfortunately my night was kind of ruined as I was coming back from BMW on the motorway and the car in front of me kicked up about half the tread of a semi trailer tire (ironically) which hit the front of the Z4, dislodging the passenger kidney grill and sending it flying onto the shoulder at about 65 mph. :(

I had to walk back a midst the rush hour traffic to retrieve my grill. Fortunately while it had separated the chrome ring (currently plasti-dipped black) from the outer edge by breaking off the tabs that hold it on - it was otherwise undamaged. The car suffered only rubber scuffs which wiped off and once I straightened out / snapped back together some other bits of the front end it seems almost as good as new. I stopped off for some plastic weld 2-part epoxy and that is currently curing, gluing the ring to the kidney. If all goes well and that holds up I should be able to re-install my grill and be happy again by tomorrow evening.

For now though... there is beer. :thumbsup:




Oh! I also ran OVER a very young deer today which was sleeping in the road. I thought it was just general roadkill and the choice was either hit the oncoming car, hit it directly with the tyre or try and straddle it and hope it doesn't hit the underside of the car. I chose to straddle and as I was passing over it (60 mph) I heard a very slight knock as it hit (presumably) the front tyre mudflap that extends toward the center of the car. I heard what can only be described as a baby deer scream (it wasn't dead, turns out... :) ) and as I looked in the rear view mirror I saw it get up and run off the road like it had... well... just been slapped at 60 mph.

It's been a bad day... collision-wise. Probably also not the best day for that deer.
