Bought a Z4 35is

Yesterday I picked this up.

Z4 35is
2011, 20 000 miles

Its replacing a 2011 911 C2S PDK until the price of the new 991 fall a little, I am quite pleased with is so far. I have not driven it much but will later today.

I paid £22k for it which I think its quite a good price, a new one would probably cost £37k with options so I think £22k is a vary fair price. £25 to £27k which most people seem to be asking for a used 35is its just too much (in my opinion).

My plan is to put a Evolve remap on it, Alpine software on the gearbox and update to 2014 maps.

I will post some photos later.
 
Great price the one's I've seen are a lot more, there is a nice 35i on Ebay but its £27000 a 35is for £23600 with 31000 miles.

Wow good price - a lot of car for the money
Haven't seen one that cheap.
I think maybe there needs to be a price correction on second hand 35is in some cases, as we have seen what they can be bought for brand new on Broadspeed.
 
Cheaper than mine - which was 2011 with 28K miles for £25,000. You did well.

If you get it mapped I will be interested to know how it handles the power at 'normal' speeds.

I thought the Alpina software for was the slushbox.
Can't see how the DCT software can be improved. Any more aggressive on the shifts with the extra power from the remap will just lead to DCT failure.

I'd also go for another map over the Evolve tune. Go for Cobb or Proceed. Or if you want the most out of your engine go for a custom tuner flash.
 
You will see when you drive it aggressively, more power is not on the top of most people's upgrade list for the 35is.

Sticky tyres (ideally non run flat) would be my #1 first upgrade, followed by #2 quaiffe LSD.

Without doing those 2 things, I'm at a loss to see how you put down any additional power even under ideal driving conditions.

I see a lot of posts from people saying they are remapping 35i engines to 400bhp (which is very doable) - or 35is engines which have over boost anyway.... what are they doing with this power? In standard trim the car struggles with 330/360 on boost & is twitchy as fook under heavy acceleration at any speed - constantly loosing traction.

More power with this setup only gives even less traction, not more acceleration.

My suspicion is that the vast majority of posters on the subject of mapping a 35is probably don't have a 35is / haven't driven a 35is / and are actually t'interweb dreamboat pilots.

I don't drive softly as some folk on here know.....and I only think I use 75% of what's on tap on my 35i.

I can't see possibly what you could do with 400 that 306 isn't ample enough for.....

Also people forget, it's the driver who has some input too.....
 
I have floored my 35i a few times just to try it out and it's scary how fast it is and the front end is suddenly very light why people want more power except on a race track is beyond me unless it's my age most of the time probably only drive it at 60% and listen to the nice burrble. :tumbleweed: :thumbsup:
 
I've test driven a couple of 35is now and am completing my purchase next week.

On my drives the only times I could put my foot fully down was on the motorway etc. I just don't see how you could use any more power in normal driving, the thing is so so fast. But of course I am not a F1 driver.
 
I think you feel that with any fast car to begin with. When I first got into my 320d from a ford focus I couldn't believe how much power was available. It felt like a rocket ship. 6 months later I was getting a remap done.

Same story with the 35i. Initially you think "wow I can't see how any more power would be useful, this things a rocket" but after a few months you're back to researching power upgrades.

I don't find traction a huge issue with good tyres. 265 width PSS on the rear and it sticks perfectly.
It's not as if 400bhp is a crazy amount of power for a rwd car. There's cars out there with 1500bhp all coming from the rear wheels.

The remap also makes the car more drivable in the midrange. Seems to just make progress a lot more willingly.
 
Nice purchase. My only regret with the Z4 is that I didn’t go for a 35is. It was a bit of an impulse buy so my knowledge wasn’t up to scratch at the time. With another kid on the way my 2-seater days will soon be over for a while, so this itch may never get scratched :(
 
I know a bit about high power cars (have quite a few vehicles, inc 2 rear wheel drive exotics with >500hp).

The problem isn't lots of power - I love lots of power.

The problem is that the 35is can't handle what it has already. It's just a fact, not my opinion.It is what it is.

Drive it quickly, by which I mean stay over 4k revs & be aggressive on changing up at 6k ish revs, sport + mode. Then see for yourself.

In perfect conditions with wide sticky tyres it will twitch violently & break traction on every gear change up to 100mph, even in a straight line.

Over 90mph on any kind of undulation you will get a 'shimmy' as it tries to balance the traction between the rear wheels which just feels plain unsafe when under wide open throttle.

This is on 2 different 35is cars (mine plus a friends to make sure there was not something wrong with mine).

It goes away if you fit a real LSD.... then you may be able to put down more power.

Just the way it is, I love my 35is, but it is a definite shortcoming of the chassis / lack of LSD design.

i can only echo what has already been said, the car really needs an lsd to aid its handling and stability. i am feeling the difference even cornering at 30mph with the lack of lsd and at times feels this really lets the car down.

the dct is fine through the gears but going from first to reverse or vice versa really annoys the crap outta me as it dawdles. the previous 20i auto gearbox selected between those two gears immediately. also i have noticed when moving off in first, it can sometimes be a tad apprehensive if you dont give it a lot of beans which is also annoying

aside from these issues, i havent got a lot to complain about as 90% of the time it does the job as a daily cruiser perfectly well

I have remapped 'quick' cars and made them less fun.

My 330d at 245bhp went to 305bhp and was far less fun as you couldn't put the power down that well. That said the remap was really well written ... I just decided I didn't like remapped diesels.
Equally a hike from 230bhp on a Golf GTi Edition 30 to 300bhp made the car brilliant as with the map I had the power came in higher up the rev range as opposed to low down meaning it was very easy to deploy (well, easier than you would ever expect anyway). The remap added only about 15bhp to 4000rpm then added loads more all the way to the rev line :evil:

I think the 35iS could manage 15-25bhp more but more than that is pub talk as it will make the car less able to put power down anywhere even on a good surface in the dry. I love the fact with the 35iS as standard I can use all the power easily and it absolutely flies off the line. Map it and I bet 1st gear would be useless. 2nd only useable in the dry but acceleration in 3rds onwards immense - ok if you are on a track.
 
Not surprised OP wants to improve the performance of a 35iS, coming from a 911 C2S! Must be one of the best sports cars around at present. Quite a hard act to follow i would imagine.

I do agree with this comment in that you get used to the new performance level after while. However there must come a point where a car becomes scarily fast. My zed is fast but i don't find it scarily fast. I reckon once one is getting a 0-60 of low 4s or lower then one would probably find that too fast...

This is it really, I have come from a 2011 C2S PDK which is a amazing car. Its a little be like dating a reasonably good looking girl with a nice personally after you have been ****ing a hot stripped for the last few years :evil:

After taking the car out for a drive today I now understand that its not going to be a good idea to put more power into it, as others have said it can only just put down the power it has now forget about any more.
 
What tyres does the car currently have?
If it's still on runflats then it will be a wild ride even without a remap!

You got a seriously good deal on the car. Was it from a private seller? Did you have to knock them down on price a lot?
 
Its on Run Flats now.

I got it from a private seller seller, he started asking 27k and reduced to 24.5k I offered 22k which he accepted.
