Boston Marathon

I've been having discussions with an American friend on fb. She is heavily into conspiracy theory and thinks this was a false flag operation.

(My friend in Boston is ok, he got in touch)

False flag? What, like done by the government, like 9/11 allegedly?

Bullshit.

Unfortunately nothing would surprise me these days! :|

What sort of security allowed that to happen anyway?

I have spent quite some time in Boston and have sat drinking coffee in the place where the bomb went off. Sends a shiver right through me

Even though it is easy to point towards the usual suspects (I am guilty of that as well and am the first to admit that I would look in that area), the only thing that stuck in my mind that those are not the only ones with violent tendencies.

Think of the Oklahoma bombings for example, a complete different type of terrorist there.

Yep. As a distraction/to incite/add fuel to the cause she puts across a very good argument but I just don't want to believe a government would plant bombs in a city like that.

It was where spectators were walking wasn't it? so probably no searches at that point. In the London marathon you can get quite close to the finish line to watch runners without entering the secure areas.

I guess it does have to be considered.....probably a new terrorist cell from North Korea perhaps?

Looking at the images and the story of that 8 year old boy makes your stomach turn.

my first thought was about a type like Mc Veigh, someone with a disturbed mind, a radical. i would not be supprised if this is about the new firearms law in the US, as this has an impact on the "militia movement".

I think these days, there are a lot of people that start by thinking that way and work backwards...

There has been so many events... and so many discussions about them all...

Operation Northwoods = 9/11 for example...

I personally think it's just a nutter (this time), maybe linked to the chat about gun control again in the US... but who knows these days...

Glad your friend is OK...

Don't get the gun control link....what would they be trying to prove?

they'll use this as a need to have guns - personal protection and things like that... kind of a warped way of looking at it mind you....

People like this relinquish their 'human rights' when they disregard the rights of others for some warped religious or nationalistic reason.
I'm pretty much apolitical, but, when it comes to this sort of thing, I'm slightly to the right of Gengis Khan!

She points out things like this, from the FireHouse web site....

PRESS RELEASE
CREATED: APRIL 12, 2013

Boston EMS is deploying a new, off-the-shelf, lightweight mobile device for the first time at the Boston Marathon on April 15.

The platform, from SafetyPAD, is intended for use in mass-casualty situations gives EMS personnel the ability to carry into crowds and assess a patient upon arrival, document in realtime, transmit data to transport units before they arrive, and other features.

Boston EMS will utilize the new Android-based program for bike and gator teams along race route.

This is just one of the many points she has put across. I call coincidence but she thinks its because the bombs were planted by the government.

With things like this, there are usually a lot of coincidences…

Same with 9/11 and 7/7… I mean … “training” for a terrorist attack on the same day as a real one, in the same rail stations, using the same type of devices… what are the odds…

The question is, when – if at all, do all these coincidences add up to something more sinister…

After both these events anti-terrorism laws are rushed through, which actually give the good honest citizens less protection and freedom… all under the guise of “the people asked for it”.

Or… everything could all be simple failures and coincidences on such a magnitude that allow things like that to happen…

I think there is enough history to know that the US have in the past hurt their own and funded the “baddies” to get what they want… add that to the economic terrorism they and the UK carry out every day…

I guess it depends on your point of view and what you think humans and governments are capable of…

Either way, it keeps people busy, talking and asking questions….which can only be good… maybe…

Well it certainly doesn't seem like a Middle-Eastern inspired act.

- No suicide bomber
- Relatively low casualty rate - if this was an Al-Qaeda type attack many more would've been killed
- No martyrdom video
- No claim of responsibility

My money is some disaffected far-right Militia type nutjob.

Quite high, actually. Training takes place in live situations as well as beforehand. Go to a football ground (or most massed sporting events) and you'll hear the tannoy announcing "operation XYZ" is starting. Also, if you have a system that handles mass casualties, where would you deploy it?

IMO conspiracy theories are mostly indicative of people massaging facts to fit with personal prejudices/beliefs. For me, Occam's razor applies whilst the facts are forthcoming.

Associated Press April 16, 2013 12:25 pm

WASHINGTON - The explosives used in the deadly Boston Marathon bombing were contained in 6-liter pressure cookers and hidden in black duffel bags on the ground, a person briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

One of the explosives contained shards of metal and ball bearings, and another contained nails, the person said.

A second person briefed on the investigation confirmed that at least one of the explosives was made out of a pressure cooker. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

Two bombs blew up seconds apart Monday at the finish line of one of the world's most storied races, tearing off victims' limbs and leaving the streets spattered with blood and strewn with broken glass. Three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy, and more than 170 were wounded.

President Barack Obama said called the explosions a terrorist attack and said law enforcement and intelligence officials were trying to determine who was responsible. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombings.

These types of pressure cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 joint FBI and Homeland Security intelligence report. One of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the intelligence report said.

"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said. The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any role in the Boston Marathon attack.
