Borrow 2 rear wheels for a few hours? (Midlands/Leicestershire/Warwickshire)

Afternoon all,

I've got an ongoing saga with suspected a buckled rear wheel (possibly two) on my Z4 Coupe 3.0 si.

Hit a horrendous pot hole a few months ago and still trying to work out the issue of lots of vibration and rattling over 55mph since. It's particularly bad on specific road surfaces. I've had the suspension checked over twice. I've had the buckled wheel "fixed" by a local repairer but still got the issue and suspect it is not fixed.

I've had two new tyres on the rear as one had a "bulge" which still did not fix it. They said they think both rear wheels are buckled "slightly".

I'm almost certain im just going to need two new wheels but I'd like to swap the wheels with someone first just to be sure, unless it's something more structual etc.

It's the first time this has happened in 130k miles but I guess I was just unlucky this time - I'm usually good at missing the pot holes that are this mad but it went with a real crash when I went down it, the sensor in the roof even fell off, was hanging down and even the rear view mirror was moved - tells you how deep it was! :o

Annnnnyway, if someone wouldnt mind swapping rear wheels for a few hours for me to test, it would be really appreciated.

Or, if im going off on a tangent here, feel free to tell me!!

I've chekced the VIN and My wheels are: S787 BMW alloy wheel, M double spoke 135. @enuff_zed tells me the rears are 18x18.5" ET50 (different to front).

I'm located in Midlands/Leicestershire/Warwickshire.

Cheers,

Chris

It's actually both! It really rattles through the seat and door at 55mph+ and steering feels shaky too.

You might have bent the wheel but also the hub? You need it on a 2 poster ramp in the air and put it in gear and see what’s wobbling.

The plot thickens! The night before the booking at the garage took it out for a test drive on all sorts of roads and no issues! and no issues since for days! Unbelievable but I guess good news..whilst confusing!

I just have no idea what could cause that vibration but then go away after having the problem for well over a month!?

Very odd? Possibly knocked something out of line and it's popped back into place, but that would be a rare occurence.

Could be a sticky brake calliper. When they grab on they can cause a vibration.
Spot any excessive brake dust on a certain wheel?
If it does it again after a run. Feel which wheel is hot.

@enuff_zed, Yes seems like that, no idea what that could be though. I'll update this thread if it comes back!

@j3nks79, thanks for the suggestion, will try that if it comes back!

@j3nks79 the hunch was right! It came back, almost certain it is sticky calliper, very hot wheel on front passenger side and extra brake dust!

I'm getting a quote for either refurb or new on both sides as its done nearly 184k miles. Friend said it has probably warped the disk too so might be best to get disks and pads and the callipers done?

So glad that I'm hopefully getting to the bottom of this intermittent issue! Nearly blew a grand on two new wheels, eek!! My Z4 is going back into daily use now at around 15k miles per year so I want it to be as tip-top as possible.

That's great to hear. Bit of a sod about the brakes but look back at where you were last year. The zed continues.

Yea, lots left on them but glad to be getting it sorted in one go.

Oh yea, I'll never forget the video of the shock absorber! Thanks again!!

Its booked in for Friday, fingers crossed that will be the end of the problems.

On a side note - do you guys experience any "dead area" in the centre of the steering? I'm not sure if im imagining it but im sure its more dead moving left and right in the very centre, maybe 10mm or more each way and theres no wheel movement on the road.

Check inner tie rods. Very common on BMW. Jack the car up grab the wheel at 9 and 3 and give it a wobble. You will be able to feel it.
