Boot Water Ingress - The journey of roof motors, hydro pump and seals

Today's update. The Foxwell NT530 arrived. Seem I still have some errors which is not a surprise. I cleared the old errors in the hope the roof would function now the new motor is fitted to the pump and it would allow me to open the boot and close the windows. That wasn't to be the case, roof lifted a little and I still cant get it to latch closed, so no window function. As for using the foxwell to open the boot I tried two options with the foxwell, one route did perform the soft open but then immediately soft closes, so you cant actually open the boot. The other option to unlock tailgate just fails, doesn't even get as far as a semi soft open like the previous active test. So, its back at the dealership to see what they can do with it. Oh I did run a live test on the roof motor oil and that seems to be fine, was sitting around 11 degrees and got as far as 20.

Today's update.
ah, thats a shame. I do wonder if you have a duff battery.. this car is prone to those errors and if you search on here yours can be on those threads.. (you probably have, but I thought I would post them).

Plus when I search for the codes you have, you get lots of matches for broken microswitches too.. which do occur regularly.

I know you can't open the boot to replace it but you could recharge the battery via the under bonnet points and "hope" that helps. Just a thought.

I just posted up elsewhere how I solved a roof problem and it turned out to be one of the hall sensors, the connector looked corroded (and I don't have any evidence of any pools in the boot) - so if you have had water in there you could be dealing with corroding connectors. I would at least re-seat the connections around the CTM and the 26 pin connector (all connectors really) on the CTM.

I hope his helps.

As already said I’d definitely make sure the battery is fully charged and even try some jump lead’s from another car on the charging points under the bonnet before booking it in with the main dealer

When the boot unlocks on the motors catch it quick and pull up. Looks two man job.
I have to do this on my modification, as i trigger boot it will re-close if i don't pull it up as the motors release.

Thank you for all the comments on this issue - just an update, I had to drop the car off at the dealership as I couldn't get the windows to close (tried Foxwell too) so it was the only option I had to get the car under cover and secure. I should hear back from them soon and will post an update on next faults/proposed fix.

Ok so an update, BMW had the car for a week and I have just managed to get an update which has been hard work. So, just to recap, after I replaced the motor with a refurb from roofmotors I cleared the errors with the Foxwell and tried the roof again. It moved but would not go down all the way, then when I went to put the roof back up it would lock in place. This also meant the boot wouldn't open and the widows would not go back up. I tried the foxwell but no joy. So back to the dealership before any chance of rain. A week later I called again, their engineer managed ('after spending a lot of time') to lock the roof down using a special tool.

As far as diagnostics go, he said they would advise replacing the pump (£2.5k + fitting) knowing I have replaced just the motor. They would then try again and if that failed replace the electronic boxes in the boot. I said that's not really diagnostics, its just a replace everything approach. He kinda agreed and said you might be better of with a specialist who can get to the root issue.

So, I have booked in CaymanAutos in Surrey. £80+vat for diagnostics (need car for a couple of hours) and they will give a fixed price to repair. Earliest availability is over a month away, so I'm booked for May 18th and will update on here.

I guess there is a slim chance the battery is a problem although I am reluctant to try the roof again as every-time ends up in a trip to the dealership. Does anyone know what the 'special tool' might be and how its used?

Cheers ...

Oh an I should add the roof is locked at the front windscreen ok, locking at the base of the rear window is the problem - hence engineer used a tool to do it manually. Which of course means the windows now work ok...

OMG, what a story. :x

1 week at BMW! Each E89 with a roof issue can be fixed in either a max of 5 hours or in 11 hours, when the hydraulic loom has to be replaced.

Interesting the Foxwell story, as I also was looking for details about it's abilities regarding the E89 roof, but no dealer could supply me with some details. With your experiences, it's not worth to buy from my point of view for only a single E89.

The Foxwell is a tough one, some people have really found it helpful but so far its limited for my case but somehow I am pleased to now have one.

I have just returned from the dealership, plugged in the Foxwell and ran a scan - there are no faults showing so I'm not sure what the technician is seeing to conclude the pump also needs replacing.

I'm hesitant to try anything myself because if the roof fails to lock again then I'm back in again with a locked boot and windows open. I will put the battery on charge overnight just as a matter of course. The dealership desk guy described the tool they use, as a bar with two things on the end - so a little vague...

The invoice says ' Emergency closing hardtop, Locator lugs for emergency roof closure out of line. Re-align and secure.'

Some casing was removed and left on the passenger seat, looks like where some microswitches might be - so he was doing something in that space.

Ah thank you, so 540320 it is 👍

Now if I want to try anything and avoid another trip I need to get hold of one of these 😬

Thank you for the stats, most interesting - so despite what the BMW tech says its unlikely to be the actual pump. When i swapped the motor that's all I did, I haven't for example drained and refilled the hydro fluid - the fill level still seems ok.

With regards to the manual locking and the warning in the service manual, re do not operate the roof/remove the fuse - do you know why they say this, i.e. is it because the roof cannot automatically unlock when its been manually locked or more just a precaution as clearly to have been manually locked there must be a roof problem and it shouldn't be operated?

Such a shame I have to wait a month to get someone to other then BMW to look at it :(

Thanks again!!

Ok I have seen on this forum RBM Hampshire have a good INDY reputation, I spoke with them this morning and booked in for Thursday 22nd. If they draw a blank then I guess my next stop is to try Cayman in May - will keep the forum posted.

Its useful I think now for me to have a relationship with an INDY anyway, so may as well start now...

Battery is now fully charged, it quickly went to stage three and then took overnight to complete and I'm wondering (as the bottom of this was under water) what this thing actually does, is it just a connection point? I have cleaned it up and put some contact point spray on it..

The red box contains a group of fuses, the grey plug supplies the hydraulic pump. If the bottom of your trunc was full up with water, you should dismount this fuse box, open it (it's only clipsed) and check if there's any corrosion (in green) inside.

Have a look at the following picture with a massive corrosion inside:

Thank you, I just checked and you were right - not looking its best!!

I will lookup the part number and order one now...
