Boot/Trunk Torn Seal Budget Fix

One of the areas of water egress into trunk is a torn weather seal. Once torn it loses it's compression strength and allows water entry past the seal. Unfortunately it's very expensive to replace. I believe around $250+. Here is a low cost quick fix that has lasted me more than 7 months. It involves inserting foam weather strip into the torn seal to increase it's compressibility. How did it get torn?

Normal use. It's a heavy crush zone.

Well my 12 year old car used daily, boot up and down like fiddlers elbow.
No sign of wear, still supple, but i have used some tyre rubber treatment on it.

Mine has tears on both sides and I know many other people have the same problem. My car was originally purchased in Florida, very hot climate.
