Boot/Trunk opening

People were changing the struts to do this on R56 minis a few years ago, and then all stopped as it buggered something up...just can't remember what! I'd just live with it, never found it an issue.

No mate. It's either been deactivated (unlikely) or the pre facelift doesn't have a warning light?

I can confirm that the pre-facelifts don't have a warning light for when the boot is open. I've driven long distances with the boot open many many times.. :?

The Z4 key fob is very poorly designed, imo. Why on earth they made the boot button go right to edge of the fob against the keychain I don't know.. Far too easy to apply enough pressure on the button to open it while driving or in your pocket. If they just stopped the button 2-3mm before the edge of the fob, none of us would be driving around with our boots open!

I drive around with the key in the ignition with the key fob attached - no problem! :driving:

Mine's a pre facelift but I have a light if the boot is not closed properly. The Alpina spoiler does make the boot very heavy to lift but it's not a problem

FWIW E46 Compacts had a self-opening hatch, but the struts may be too long for a Roadster - must measure my Coupe ones!

I had a facelift E87 and the remote just popped the lock, the hatch didn't open at all. Still had to use the tailgate badge to lift it - seemed totally pointless to me! If the car was unlocked using the badge worked without pressing the remote button anyway!

Whereas on the E46 Compact it replaced the boot button on the remote didn't require the car to be unlocked and the hatch opened completely by itself (unless it was freezing cold) but that made it a useful feature, rather than pointless - any they call it progress! E46s also have a parcel shelf with storage compartments, yet AFAIK on an E87 that isn't even an option?!

I really don't find the boot a problem. On my last car I could open the boot without unlocking the car, whereas on my current one I have to unlock the car to then use the fob to open the boot. At first it annoyed me, but I have 'previous' with regard to locking my keys in the boot of my wife's car. At least with this car it would be very hard to lock them in the boot and not be able to open it again.

Good point - only a few weeks ago I locked the keys in the boot of the E46! Luckily at home so I just unlocked it with the spare! :D

I'm paranoid about locking the key in the boot. When we went to France I made my sister carry the spare key in a bag that never went in the boot -on pain of death.

Hi guys,

Boot lid wise. Are there supposed to be two springs left and right off the boot struts, to help spring the boot open and how they would be connected? A photo would help a lot, to see how it's supposed to be / show you how mine is (but as this is my first post I'm still learning how to post messages).

I'm replacing left and right boot struts as the boot's hard to open. I can see a stiff wire that's coiled on the left one end connected to body, other not connected to anything (looks like it's supposed to attach to the boot, and on the right can see where a spring used to be, but is snapped off.

My thoughts were that this was somehow supposed to add some tension to the boot, so it did spring open or at least open a little bit, when you opened the boot with the key fob.

Cheers.

Yeah, when you get a brand new unit you get new springs with it, I think - worth asking to make sure if you order one. I bought my clear one on my last car second-hand. The key is to only do them up finger tight as the rubber seal will do its job and hold the light in place too.

SpRings are sold separately, with whites ones at least.

On my car, when I press the boot release on the key, the boot lids raises about 3 to 4 inches, but only if the car is unlocked like Bings.

Makes no difference on my '04 plate, locked or unlocked it only opens 1/2" - that's enough for me
