Boot/Trunk opening

Hi all,
Bought my first Z4 earlier this year and with help from Tug got the roof motor fixed and reinstalled, really enjoying driving the car.

Anyway I have a question about lifting the boot lid up.
When I operate the switch or use the remote it releases the boot catch but the boot lid does not raise,
I have managed to brake the middle rear light by using that has a "Handle", has anybody else found this a problem and has anyone come up with a better solution to raising the lid after releasing the catch?

Once the boot has opened slightly I put my fingers under the rim of the boot lid and lift it that way. I had assumed that everyone did that!

Apparently it's meant to be like that. Always found it a bit weird.

Some guy was going to try and install some struts which lift the boot fully open on unlock, but haven't heard anything about it.

There's a thread somewhere, using some small springs fitted to the existing struts, when the loch release's the tension of the compressed springs pushs the boot open , idea was first used on a 1 series

Apparently doesn't work as the stuts go all the way inside so springs can't be fitted

yes they can fitted springs to mine not the best as a trial but work open it about 2"

When I had an Alfa GTV there was a guy who changed the struts for Brera struts I think and he ended up with an auto opening boot.

We would need to look at the BMW car line up.

I've never found it an issue tbh. But I guess it could pop a bit higher.

You may find the light is not related to your manner of opening the boot - they are red owned for breaking as the original springs were too strong, and over-tightened, which results in them cracking over time. Slamming the boot doesn't help either, but it's not the main culprit.

Is that why they crack. Thought I must have knocked it at some point, this explains it. :roll:

Yeah, when you get a brand new unit you get new springs with it, I think - worth asking to make sure if you order one. I bought my clear one on my last car second-hand. The key is to only do them up finger tight as the rubber seal will do its job and hold the light in place too.

Yeah it's easy, but i've also found it's easy to pull away with the boot unlocked...

I once drove 10 miles home with the boot unlocked, at high speed. Must have popped open when I had my keys in my pocket. I would've noticed had the boot popped all the way up, but as it only opens a tiny bit, I didn't notice.

But there would be a light on the dash if the boot was open... At least there is on mine, and on my last one. It's the door open symbol. Doesn't yours have that Ben ?

Yes had my dash light on twice today whilst we were out and about. First time I had this for months. Gave the catch a spot of WD when we got home. See if that sorts it. I had been wondering if I could add anything to give lid a little more height when released.

No mate. It's either been deactivated (unlikely) or the pre facelift doesn't have a warning light?

I can confirm that the pre-facelifts don't have a warning light for when the boot is open. I've driven long distances with the boot open many many times.. :?

The Z4 key fob is very poorly designed, imo. Why on earth they made the boot button go right to edge of the fob against the keychain I don't know.. Far too easy to apply enough pressure on the button to open it while driving or in your pocket. If they just stopped the button 2-3mm before the edge of the fob, none of us would be driving around with our boots open! :lol:
