Boot springs & Top UJ steering

Hi All, I have a E85 3.0si and the steering seems a bit vauge. :o I have replaced the rear wishbone bushes, got a little better but not great. I think the top UJ is worn. How difficult are these to change and where is the best place to buy from?

Also the little springs on the boot hinges are not attached I can't for the life of me get them to bend and snap on, is there an easy way to re-attach?

Cheers

Are you sure there is actually anything wrong with your steering? It is electric, so feels very vague and numb.

hi ben, thanks for responding, it often feels like its not quite engaged and is a bit daunting at speed. There maybe no problem, but doesn't feel as I would expect.

Hi
The springs on the boot hinge don't attach to both sides of the hinge, they are there as ”Helpers” to lift the lid off of the catch when you unlock it.
Stu.

ah okay, so they are not supposed to attached, thanks. My boot doesn't quite open after its popped, can just about get my finger under the lip. Is that normal?

Ahh my bad - I think my UJ is also a bit fooked as on the motorway it seems to make tiny movements to the left and right a bit

that's the feeling yes. But trying to determine the fault, the top steering column UJ does not look like the easiest thing to change, so wanted to see what else it could be first.

Have you tried moving your steering wheel side to side slightly with the engine off? If you do it on mind it knocks slightly (I presume it's the UJ anyway!) so I'm looking at the same thing... Pretty shocking for an 08 car!

yes, I did exactly the same test hence my diagnosis, only done 65k too so wouldn't expect that sort of wear. hoping other have seen the same issue?

That's all our both of our E85s do - always assumed that is normal, but they are the only boots I've opened!

What Jamie Z4 has said about the steering is exactly as mine feels. It's a common complaint about the Z4. I believe it's normal, but happy to be proven wrong.

Yep, for sure. Well I reckon so anyway. i have replaced virtually replaced every bush on the front, had 4 wheel alignment, new tyres,it's better but still does it to some degree. Worse on motorways on lanes that have been badly worn by lorries....learning to live with it..
