Boot rack

Hi all,

So, I have a problem with my newish hobby, kitesurfing. I can get all my kit happily in the boot except the board which currently has to sit in the passenger seat/well. The drives down to the coast are much fun as the kitesurfing itself so taking the z4 is a must. I can only see one solution; a boot rack.

I've searched around and haven't found anyone who has actually bought, fit and commented on one of these. There's a decent one in the US but the shipping costs are as much as the rack ($450 in total!). There are some generic ones around that will probably fit but don't look great and I'd like to hear from anyone that has one. Also, not keen on drilling holes in my boot lid for the BMW option..

Any views or bright ideas?

Thanks

The previous owner of mine installed the BMW rails on the boot and i have the rack too.

to be honest i have not actually needed to use it yet.

It looks fairly sturdy certainly more so than the generic ones with the clips that go round the boot lid edge.

The downside is, as you have said that once it is on, it is on as you have to drill holes.

I dont think having them on particularly adds or detracts anything to the rear.

I can sort out some photos if you want to have a bit more of a detailed look at it.

As well as the rack attachment you can also get a hardcase and a ski rack that clips into the rails.

Partial hijack: Do the OEM boot rails match the body colour, or are they Titanium Silver only? (I've read things that suggest the latter)

I think the OEM only comes in titanium.

I was going to take mine off (the zed is black) and colour match but i found that there is a layer of double sided 2- 3 mm foam sandwiched between them and the boot.

You cant get replacement foam from BMW (according to the local stealers)

i found some foam to replace but at 50 quid for 25m and i only want 0.5m.

Suffice to say they are still titanium.

The boot lid railing is part no 82710138294 and doesn't mention the colour in the 03/04 accessories catalogue but is illustrated in silver and £135.00 There's a 'Ski and snowboard set', part no 82710138294 (hang on, same number - checked must be a typo in the catalogue, still...) which attaches to the rails and is also £135 (unless another typo). Can scan the pic if it helps.

There's a luggage rack too at £95 but I doubt that'd help much. That also has a case for it, a snip at £305! Wonder how many they didn't sell.
