Hi folks,

When you push the button on your keys, to unlock your boot, what happens? Does the boot pop up about an inch, thus allowing you to get your fingers in to open it fully, or does it swing up all the way?

Effectively yes, it just pops enough to be sat on top of the locking catch rather than in the catch.

I'm considering adding springs to the gas struts to make it do just that.
This would be handy, has anyone done it successfully?

I've seen this done at the track recently, a guy with a 3.0si popped the boot and it shot up and i mean with enough force to damage your wrist if you tried to stop it... i have no idea what he had in place but the sheer force it lifted up made my wonder what was done... if you do I'm guessing 1 small spring would be enough this guy went all in and probably had 2 high discharge units in place of the strut

my o.e strut is enough to hold the trunk but no way enough to lift it up even with abit of help so id guess he had some mega power struts added for good measure!

I'd avoid this, what's wrong with lifting the boot up? If it's for loading purposes then as above get something gentle or you'll lose teeth one day.

2 tiny springs, they'll weigh mere grams and are hardly complex.
With new struts my boot now opens fully from about half way so they only need to give it the same sort of gentle encouragement I do.
The reason - I hate having to open the boot especially as there is no handle and/or when my hands are full.

No need for springs - just swap the gas struts for slightly higher load rating.
Several guys wanted to do this with Jag XF's so purchased them from a Derby supplier

Be aware though if you have a hardtop fitted it will impact the bottom of the glass unless you for extra bump stop rubbers on the limiter bar.

Fitting springs to open it will mean you have to touch your paintwork to close it again instead of using the internal handle to pull it down.
Fingerprints all over the bootlid.

How come the coupe got a funky combined roundel/handle/hidden lock and the roadster got, well... not that?

Have to do that anyway, especially now I have decent struts. Might try adjusting the latch so it catches first time.

Stock are 250N, any experience with uprating? Wonder how much would be needed to lift it.

A small token gesture on BMWs part to compensate for the inability to drop the roof

Actually I've never understood why they don't have stiff enough struts to open the boot-lid (or in my case tailgate)!

My E46 Compact had struts that opened the tailgate when you pressed the button - great feature if you were carrying something awkward or bulky!

But my E87 didn't have this and my E86 doesn't either - must be progress!

Maybe a bit of research is required....................

I heard it was one of the parts cobbled together from the parts bin when they put this afterthought together. From a one series by the looks.
