boot opens by itself when driving !

Flybobbie, I also removed the micro switch pictured as you mentioned this is an issue, a number is printed on it 71244709 but I can’t seem to locate that on the web to purchase a new one, have you ever replaced this switch? Thanks for your patience, I’m not mechanical minded

These definitely look rather corroded with water damage. Have you cleaned them out and tried again?

Congratulation! You got it!
Clean both parts of this blue connector with some alcohol using a smal (tooth) brush. Maybe some WD40 might be helpful for the contacts.

Seems like it’s sorted, been out for some petrol ️ pressed the break both on the move and stationary and no random boot opening, think it’s sorted; thanks for the many replies from a number of people-much appreciated

Sorry for the ridiculous delay. My issue was definitely water. It had been sat in the rain without moving for a couple of weeks. I blew the water out with a leaf blower & it allowed me to drive for a few miles before it unlocked again. I repeated the process & it hasn't happened since. Can only assume that there was water causing a short. We had a period of prolonged wet weather & the car isn't a daily so I assume that water had accumulated in the mechanism.

This exact same symptom has just started on our car.

I’ve just ordered some trim removal tools and I’m going to try and track it down.

Can any body point me in the right direction. To identify the blue connectors mentioned earlier in this thread…?

Found the connector behind the driver side rear light cluster, wiggled it and the fault disappeared.

Where it was, is a nightmare to get at to separate, inspect and clean. Since it’s right behind the boot looking system frame. As well as the plastic trim behind the lights were not coming off easily, in my case.

So I’ll monitor it for now and I’ve stuck the car in the garage, to keep it out the rain.

Hi,

It looks like others have already come to the rescue here, but this might help someone with some additional information relating to this issue. I no longer have my E89, but I posted a thread on a closely related problem a few years ago.
My specific issue was failure of the boot roundel to open the boot, but it was caused by corrosion on the same blue connector block - just a different sympton. This corrosion is caused by water ingress from the seal around the top edge of the boot opening and it's an easy fix. It's also quite easy to access this connector block when you know how.

I intended to put a link to the thread here, but my posting skills evading me today - sorry It's posted under E89 problems Thu Jan 07, 2021 and called "Another Boot not opening from boot lid roundel - cause and solution".
