Boot lid soft close failure.

Went to the car this morning put my things in the boot, lowered to close where the boot lid then kept going around a cyclic loop, trying to pull down then releasing, it couldn’t latch down and lock. Tried lock unlock and pushing down on the lid to help it, slamming it down, nothing helped, it just kept whirring away in a loop of pull down and release up.
Any clues where to start looking and testing?

Please do not slam a soft close boot lid.

I had this a while back, thought it must be electrical. Into BMW and they had to replace the lock cylinder
Cost £ 400 ish. Then remembered a valet guy slaming the boot close.
