Bonnet Struts

BMW are starting to piss me off a bit - I'd already been in to my local dealer in the summer for a 5,000 mile oil change (which they felt the need to interrogate me about), then again in September for MOT and end of warranty check up. A month later all of a sudden it needs brake fluid service and, when in for that I'm told it will need to come back for a bonnet strut service that is due... why can't they just tell me what needs doing over the next 6 months and get it all done at once? And the less said about their tyre tread depth measuring capabilities the better :headbang:

Anyway, I'm not paying dealer tax for such a simple job as bonnet struts, so can anyone recommend a decent brand to get as replacements?

Hi,
The bonnet struts on your car and most other cars are originally manufactured by a company called
‘STABILUS’,
(I used to sell Stabilus many years ago)
They are still readily available new today, there are many other ‘suppliers’ of gas lifts who are not necessarily the manufacturers of the product.
You can purchase STABILUS from a company called RTG in Leyland Lancashire check out on eBay.
Hope this has been of help.

What’s the matter with your struts? Or are they wanting to change them because they’re out of date?

They are just telling me they are due to be replaced, apparently some BMW's have them as service items and some don't. Or perhaps after I paid for an oil change that they didn't think I needed they've put me on the "will pay for anything" list...

That’s because they’re part of the pedestrian impact protection system, they have an expiry date but most owners ignore it - it’s not an mot item

These have been discussed on another thread recently. IMO if they lift the bonnet and stay in position and are not leaking I can't see any reason for them not working in an impact, however old they are. If they are not listed on the MOT there can be no 'come back' in the event of an accident. Just another 'peace of mind' rip-off IMHO.

Yeah this must be the current rip-off flavour of the month with BMW service since they have said this on both of my Z4 and 535D.
