Bonnet keeps opening

I think my bonnet release cable may need replacing?
I keep closing my bonnet and it just keeps popping back open, I'm aware this could be very dangerous so need to get it sorted fairly soon!

Is there anything else it could be?
Where can I get a bonnet release cable from?

I have a 2004 2.2. Thanks in advance :)

Hi P4XLL

I've seen you about in Clifton before now. How come you're never out on the Bristol meets or down for the English Welsh meet next month ?

Hi P

Did you get your bonnet cable fixed, I have the same problem and was wondering how much it cost for repair?

Cheers

Oh really? Small world! Did my registration give it away?

I've never really thought about doing a meet, may come along :)

I did indeed, i've seen you (in a Sterling grey Zed) a couple of times but not when I've been in my Zed.

With regards to your bonnet:
1) Does the lever inside the cabin return to its resting position after its been pulled ?
2) Is the release mechanism under the bonnet well oiled and moving freely ?

its more common not to be able to open the bonnet than it opening itself, but i suppose its just down to whether the catch sticks more when shut or open.

As above, before getting a new cable, thoroughly degrease the existing one and the catch, then apply some graphite grease - don't use WD40 as it gums up the works eventually.

If that doesn't work, phone BMW Sopers on 01522 690000, ask for the parts department, and quote the forum for a discount and (usually) free postage on a new cable.

If it's the lock itself where the bonnet locks into on the slam panel then there's one on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-E85-BONNET-LOCK-NEW-GENUINE-51237016183-/401093629653?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW%7CPlat_Gen%3AE85&hash=item5d630b16d5:g:8t4AAOSwzvlW8qjb

Hopefully, cleaning up the lock itself and re-greasing the components has solved the issue for you.
