Bonnet catch come loose!

Hi,

Just opened my bonnet to check levels etc and the bonnet would not close again so I had a look why and then realised the catch on the actual bonnet has come very loose and now no matter what I do I cant get it to fix in place to close the bonnet?

All the mechanism in the engine bay is fine but this catch is a worry as now it is only locking on the part you lift with your fingers so it is not secure :(

It looks like it is a plastic rivet that holds the catch in place which I cant understand as it seems like a very flimsy thing to be holding the bonnet down?

Any ideas please beginning to get quite frustrated considering how nice the weather is and now i cant drive it :(
 
There is a squarish steel eye bolt threaded in on each side of the bonnet that holds it down. The plastic bits just keep the eye bolts aligned so they engage the lower catches properly. The plastic bits are cheap and have been known to fail. The eye bolts provide the structural security, not the plastic bits.
 
ah ok then so what do i need to do just tighten them? After seeing someone on here say it was made with the bonnet and i needed a new bonnet i was beginning to panic haha i am not sure how it happened just seems so loose!
 
I think you meant the actual lifter I mean the loop that it clamps down on, here is an image to show you what I mean, I tried taping it up but no joy :(

It is very strange seems like it is a plastic part holding it in place? Hopefully one of you guys know where I can get a replacement or how to tighten it etc?
 
As said above there should be some proper screws/bolts that hold this in place, are you sure they haven't completely fallen out hence why you cant find them.
 
Doesnt seem to be any screws? Really odd its just loose and has a plastic rivet thing that I suppose is designed to keep it in line but now its all over the place no strength to it atall and because of this wont push the catch down to lock in :(

Taken it to a BMW specialist this morning so hopefully they can sort it out :)
 
Hmm. I think I know what happened here now. The experts that can actually see the problem are better placed for it, but do let us know how it works out.
 
Went to a bodyshop as BMW specialist could not understand what had happened or how to fix it haha so I was fairly worried but took it to a bodyshop and they spot welded it in place and now it is fixed but if this happens to anyone just take it to a bodyshop they can fix it in 20 minutes :)
