Bogging down / misfire

Bit of a scary moment this evening.

Was visiting my folks which fortunately involves a nice twisty bit of country lane :driving:

I was going up a hill, around 40mph in 3rd and I felt a kind of juddering sensation, slowed down into 2nd and I could hear something just wasn't right - sounded like it was sort of popping/burbling. Engine warning light came on.

I pulled over, turned off the engine, restarted and its absolutely fine, no warning lights or anything.

Any ideas? I'm on an '03 3.0 SMG, 67k miles.

I am booked in for am inspection 1 service at Darren Wood on Saturday anyway so will get him to take a look also.
 
Not sure what the problem is, but there should be a fault code stored if a warning light came on which might give some indication as to what the fault might be. Hope you get it sorted.
 
Obviously after my thread, I'm going to say check the coilpacks!
Whip off the rocker cover (4 nuts under the removable covers) and you will see the 6 coils.

My advice would actually be to just buy a coilpack (I believe ebay sell the Bosch ones fairly cheap) and try it. Does it misfire on idle? Hopefully so, you can obviously just keeping swapping until the symptoms go. It's such a common fault it's a handy thing to have in the glovey even if its not this particular fault. Check the spark plugs while you're in there, you'd be silly not to. Remove the plugs and clean them up, ensure the spark gap at the bottom of the plug is even etc.

Don't drive it if its constantly misfiring now, it could well damage the cat.
