Body shop playing games

So I got my E89 after the repair of the dent of the N/s wing plus bumper and n/s wing respray. This is after some idiot in Spain scraped my car whilst I was parked and tried to drive away - we got him though and all details were exchanged. As it’s a no fault claim I’m expecting to get the £400 excess back at some point.

The repair shop was the one used by the insurer - after seeing favourable comments about them I decided to not “contest” the use of this shop and off car went for repair.

Along with the respray they fitted a brand new n/s front wheel, tyre and TPS valve.

The issue is that after I picked up the car they sent an invoice through the post with a breakdown of parts and labour - the job cost the insurer £4,000 🤭

On going through the invoice I noticed that they had charged for nsf and osf badges and ns and os “tag” - on looking up the part bumbers I think it’s the bmw roundals in the week and the text underneath that.

On looking at the car though it’s obvious that they have reused the old badges - the roundals have some delamination at the edges. And the tag on the os at least has visibly not been changed. I called up the insurer who called the repairer who then wanted me to call them, now they want me to take the car in “so the manager can see it” .....a case of the repairer trying to fleece the insurer perhaps??

Also, when I picked the car up I gave it the once over but as it was peeing down with rain was limited in the detail I could go into. Yesterday I finally had the opportunity to wash it and carefully look at the repair site.

I’m happy with the quality of the spray, I can’t seem to see any defects. I did however find sone marks on the n/s a pillar - which is usually a pristine glossy black (like the other side). They won’t go with water or apc - I assume they are scuff/ overspray from when the wing was sprayed on the car. Can these be revived? (See photo below).

I will of course raise this with the manager but all in all I am disappointed in the lack of pride in their job by the repairers and their apparent desire to make a quick buck off the insurer (and ultimately me!)

Could be overspray but also looks like some pitting too. Have you tried either some clay or a cutting compound to see if it will come off? If so then only way to sort without taking the pillar off and replacing is to have the pillar painted and relaqured.

I watched a BMW garage bodyshop do just that when my dads M3 had an issue with the A Pillar being more white than piano black. It’s still good to this day and that was 12 years ago now.

I only picked it up at washing stage - I’ll see if claybat/ hand polishing works - but I won’t work too hard - as in the body shop needs to make this right as it was perfect when I took the car in 😡

It’s always Sod’s law that when you get a car back the weather is shocking and light not great so you can’t inspect it fully and it’s only when you have the time to look at it that you notice.

I once had black paint specs on a chilli red mini wing after it had been in the bodyshop and there has been a black golf in for some touch up work next to it when I picked it up. It alway annoyed me but it wasn’t too bad but the way yours look would grate on me all day everyday.

You’re right it’s not your job to get it right, it’s theirs but I’m of the opinion that if they didn’t notice their error initially then how good will they be at rectifying it. If I can fix it myself, I do.

You are right there - I don’t have much confidence leaving my car with them, however I don’t think a hand polish will do the trick and I don’t think I can do much more than that. Going to take it tomorrow and see what they say ...

So I took my car back, spoke to the manager - he said that he hoped that the badges had been changed as BMW had invoiced them for the 4 badges, I said "I know, and you invoiced the Insurance, it says so in the invoice here". He acknowledged that it appeared that the badges had not been changed, he was not sure why, and that when I called last week he had put in an order for 4 more badges "just in case" - I don't get this because if BMW invoiced them they must have sent them said badges, so they must be somewhere?? - I think I know the answer to that one ... :D ... but I don't care, if the insurance was charged then I want them whatever games they want to play.

I also showed him the overspray on the A pillar, he said they were "sweat marks" - not sure what they are but somehow related to overspray I guess, he agreed that they will most probably need to be polished out. He said once the badges were ordered they will call, pick up the car and sort out all out ... I wait with bated breath ... :)

Just to be aware the black A pillar on E89s is not paint - it's a black plastic cover of the A pillar. This probably doesn't affect the ability to remove over-spray but plastic will react differently to abrasives than paint.

Thanks, I'll mention it - one assumes they will know what they are doing ... either way I want it back the way it was when I started, however they achieve that!

So after almost 3 weeks waiting I took the car to the body shop to fit the new badges (that must have been transported on foot from Outer Mongolia they took so long to come!). In all of 15 minutes they fitted the 2 badges either side and mopped the A pillar - they seem to have removed the overspray at least.

The badges however I think I will remove and refit - I am pretty sure the badges were rock solid and flush with the wing before - look at what I have ended up with below. (Apart from the fact they could have cleaned up underneath when the badge was off!). Are these a push fit with prongs held in with double sided tape?

I won’t go back to them and will leave (further) negative review for them 😡

I made the same mistake of using the insurance repair service, and wished I hadn't. Poor gaps/alighment, not a perfect colour match. Just about everything that you could not want happened. I am living with it for the moment in the hope that my disatisfaction will fade.. :(

So before I go ripping out the new badges on the wing - could anyone who has fitted these badges before hazard a guess as to what is happening here? It looks like the badge is standing proud in the centre - as far as I was aware it’s a flat back with double-sided tape and no stud or anything - is that correct?

I’m thinking I’ll take the badges off using dental floss. Clean up. Inspect and refit using fresh double sided tape??

Thanks for any pointers.

Hi Chris, I’ve pressed my wing badges & they rock like yours do so unless mine have been fubard by the bodyshop as well....I wouldn’t worry :)

Yes i'm afraid mine are slightly proud of the surface and rock too, and mine have never been removed. Not quite as bad as yours but it does seem as if it's a trait.

Thanks both. The only reason I observed this is that before I handed it in the badge that was on the offside was super flush against the panel and solid in place - no gaps no rocking. Now it may well be they were retrofitted in a non standard way! But they certainly looked more OEM in comparison!

Thanks for looking - appreciated.
