BMW Z4 vs Audi TT

Many ex TTers here will give you the news . i looked at a couple & was tempted , they drive well , look well & have decent spec , for me it was the shape, rarity & straight 6 engine of the ZC that swung it which was a shame as a decent V6 3,2 can be had for almost half the price of a coupe Z
Would consider one if i needed to release some £££ ?
Which cars have you looked at in TT or Z4 ?

Thanks for your reply!

I currently have a 2.0 TDI TT....only 6 months old!!! But im going to the garage tomorrow to look at a Z4 2.0 M sport.

I do like my TT but the Z4 is a car I considered at the time and there are some good deals on them at the moment. My family/friends all think I am nuts considering changing so soon.

I've had a TT, and I think the Z4 is a much better, driver focused car. Aesthetically, better too.

But you're on a Z4 forum.....are you surprised by my response??

My wife has a TT, she loves it and doesn't really like my Z4... I'm the opposite, but suits me as it keeps my wheels straight! I must admit the TT hasn't got run flat tyres and is a bit more of a comfortable ride... I will be ditching the run flat tyres when I need new boots, but I find the zed a bit more refined, I don't notice there is much difference in the way of servicing prices from the stealers if that helps :)

Not surprised by your response at all but really value it!!!....so thanks! Interesting to here from people who have experienced both. :D

I think the Audi looks nice but I'm not keen on the soft top. I also think they are too common, I like something a bit different. When I was looking round the options with my wife she liked the TT but said I would have to buy a Salon to go with the image :)

I'm pleased I went with the Zed and have no regrets.

Having driven a 3.2 Mk2 TT (S-Tronic) it's a lovely car, the cabin is superior to the Z4 imo (much nicer place to be, in the Audi), but the drive is watered down and unexciting. The Z in comparison is exciting and engaging.

Horses for Courses, if I wanted a sports car to be comfortable and luxurious I'd go with the Audi, but for pure driving thrill BMW all the way!

I went from mk1 TT 225bhp to 3.0l e85. There was a gap of 3. Although the figures are similar the zed is a quicker car. Much more focused on driving and I would say a much better car. I agree with the run flat point I can't wait to have the £ notes to get rid of mine. I have got 19" wheels on mine had the same on the TT.

But I have never driven the new version of either model. But the older ones Z4 wins hands down in every way. It feels like a proper sports car instead on a posh golf. Better looking IMO and so much more fun

TTs look great and are a very nice car to sit in but Z wins hands down for driving appeal and rareity. How many TTs would you see in a ten mile stretch of road compared to the more exclusive coupe.. 8) 8)

We had the Z4M & TT-S at the same time & still have the TT & tbh they are totally different cars, one is a drivers car the other one isn't the tt isnt a drivers car but the TT is lovely to look at imo & has a better interior than the zed, but the zed is a raw driving experience in a good way but the TT makes for a better daily drive imo.

Strangely the TT even with Quattro doesn't inspire confidence & understeer shows its face inevitably, but I think the ride on the Z4M is quite heavy going but I used it as a weekend car so it didn't matter that much to me, the newer zeds are a more grown up package & I would think they would make a great daily companion.
Couple of pics :)

Isn't the OP asking for a comparison between the E89 and TT not against the old Z4? :?

Tim.
It appears he is but it wasn't clear at the outset , my initial reply was regarding the earlier Z's & TT's ,
i did consider the newer TT against a Zc but not for long , didn't even testdrive .
They are literally everywhere & as a weekender just not special enough 8)

Prior to the Z4 I had 3 TTs - 2 Mk1s (225 manual & 3.2V6 DSG) & 1 Mk2 (3.2V6 S-Tronic). They were all very good cars the main difference comparing the Mk2 to the Zed being:-

1. TT engineering was superior. All the hidden bits were better engineered from the inner wings to the door hinges. Better designed and finished.

2. TT build quality was better. Panel gaps closer and more consistent.

3. TT had proper dip stick!

4. TT had proper tyres - RFTs have their downsides.

5. TT NVH was superior. Less road roar.

6. TT cabin was more 'special'.

7. TT had bigger boot.

8. TT was brilliant in wet & snow, Z4 is hopeless.

8. Z4 has better brakes.

9. Z4 is quicker (well 340bhp v 247bhp it damn well should be!)

10. Z4 is more difficult to drive fast, needs more driver talent but is more 'rewarding'

11. TT & Z4 DCTs very similar but TT S-Tronic just that bit smoother in operation.

Yes, you would appear to be right Tim.

I guess we didn't realise people actually consider buying E89's  :poke:

Haven't owned a TT but did consider one when looking at the E89, have owned two A3s in the past and compared to BMW, Audi's I reckon still leads the way for build quality and finish. When I drove a new 1 Series recently I was quite disapointed how cheap it felt inside and not the improvement I thought it would be over the old model I had. I think the E89 does redeem itself as one of the better BMW interiors so stacks up well against a TT. Reason I didn't go for a TT is to me they look a tad too bland and doesn't have those sharp swooping lines the E89 has. Other consideration is fabric hood on the TT compared to the hardtop on the E89 which I feel is more desirable. The only downer for me with the Zed is poorer performance in the snow etc without forking out for a set of winters and the faff that entails.

If comparing against the old Z4 I would take the TT all day long :poke: :fuelfire:

It was a no-brainer indeed, especially for the enthusiast driver. :driving:

Anyway, I have to admit that in two or three years, with the //M no longer in production and the E89 not quite my kind of car, I'll be on the market for a used TT RS. I'll suffer the horrible looks and the understeer - or at least I keep telling myself so.

Surely a used Cayman S would be a better choice that a TT RS?
