BMW Z4 Emission light flashing & rough engine sound

Hi All,

My emissions light came on today and started flashing, the same time my engine started feeling very rough and the car was vibrating more than usual. The engine feels like it is juddering and it hardly has any power and is much noiser than usual.

Has anyone else experienced this before and can share what the solution was?

Thanks in advance

Could be lots of things, lambda sensor/maf etc
Unless it's belching out blue smoke-then your engines fubard :( you need to get the codes read to give you a pointer.
Regards

No smoke thankfully. I've found a post on here where they suggest it is a coil pack which fixes it (link below). I'll have to take it to a garage and see what the readout says I guess

Or get yourself a cable and software for £30 - half the cost of most diagnostics. If you've got the time to wait that is.

Yep, sounds like a coil pack - quick test is to remove each HT lead one at a time (and then replace them), most of them should result in worse tickover/stalling but removing the one to the faulty coil pack should result in little or no change (depending on how 'faulty' the pack is)

You can also try this by removing the whole coil pack from the spark plug but each coil pack is held in place by a couple of screws whereas the HT leads are a latched connector on the top of the coil pack so disconnecting the HT lead is easier

Had a quick hunt and here's a video that shows what to do on an E46 but it's essentially the same process

I'd buy a code reader as well - just put in an order myself for a KW 808 on ebay - recommended on this forum.
