I was looking into a potential gear box problem on my car.
when i started to consider looking for a replacement, the searches seem to suggest a 2009 E89 was only supplied with a 6 speed manual.
The 7 speed was fitted to the automatic double clutch models.
Anyone know how i can check if that is correct or not?

Hi,
6-speed manual (18i / 20i / 23i / 28i / 30i / 35i)
6-speed automatic (23i / 30i)
8-speed automatic (18i / 20i / 28i)
7-speed dual-clutch (35i / 35is)

Thanks. i should have stated my model clearer - its a 23i......but 7 speed manual for some reason (6 forward, 1 rev).
oh dear....

It's a 6 speed manual. You don't count the reverse gear.

If the box is clunky, normal crap box, almost the worse i've know.
Many times been tempted to fit second hand box to see if different.

It might be worth a try. I've had 7 manual BMWs with Getrag gearboxes and they have covered the range from great to obstructive with baggy in between, so they do seem to vary wildly.

If you work on that basis my 5 Series touring has an 10 speed box, 8 forward 1 reverse and 1 neutral.

And if you even think about it, it passes though neutral every time you go from one gear to another, both up and down the box, so you end up with a Fast And Furious gearbox of an inflate amount depending on how far you drive.
