BMW Z4 E85 2.2 / 2.5 / 3.0

Hi,
My name is Ian and I’m looking to buy my first z4!
I’m looking for a 6 cylinder 2.2 onwards.
I don’t have a huge budget unfortunately - £2800
Is there anyone looking to sell?

There are cars around in budget but if your budget for purchase is £2800 you will need some in reserve for the inevitable work. Personally I'd pay a little more for the best you can find as the difference between a dog and a gem is now the price of four tyres, a brake overhaul and some cosmetics.

Let us know how the search goes.

Hi Ian, and welcome to the forum.

Some good advice there from Ewazix - budget creep seems almost inevitable whenever I'm car hunting!

Hopefully you'll manage to find the right car soon.

Iain.

Appreciate the advice chaps, i may be clutching at straws here a little but I am due to view a car on Monday.

Its had the sun roof motor relocated to boot, new discs and pad, power steering ebs motor replaced, new Pirelli tyres and the chap selling does seem very genuine and a keen car fan.

It’s the 2.5 as well, I would rather the 3.0 but they appear very few and far between at the moment.

Wish me luck!

If you secure a good 2.5 with that work done and needing no additional spend for £2800 we’ll just say you’re doing well

A 3.0 at that price point, is as Ewasix says more than likely to need another £1k spend.

Good luck with the viewing

As Andy says if you find a fully sorted 2.5 for £2.8k and it's HPI and MOT history is OK that's a great find

Without igniting the old 2.5 Vs 3.0 debate I've had my low-miles mint 2.5 for 11 years as a summer toy and never felt short-changed, I've driven both and been on runs with 3.0 and ///M cars and kept pace in real world road driving. If your heart is set on a 3.0, or you are going to do a lot of motorway miles where the 3.0 six speed offers an 'overdrive' ratio, then you should hold out for maybe a very high miles 3.0 that's had great maintenance. These cars can wear big miles very well if looked after but high mileage kills values. Otherwise I'd give a good 2.5 a chance.

The car does have 100k miles but was MOT'd 4 weeks ago and he has all service log and receipts - it sounds promising but I hope it's no dud. I will post some pictures should it be the one for me.

I want the car for enjoyment, I live in suffolk so the country lanes are ideal territory for a perky Z4. It will be kept in the garage over winter months.

What's the advice in terms of checks to the car, what are the common issues to look out for?

The 6 speed was the pull to the 3.0 but they are more expensive and my budget restricts it unfortunately - one for the future.

Hi Ian,

I am in Norfolk and you are welcome to view my 3.0i if you want. It has done 129k but has new shock absorbers/springs/top mounts/bushes, brakes f & r and complete cooling system renewed. It's £3800 and I have a hardtop available too. 11 months MOT.

Kind regards

Zac

Darn, was a 3.0 for just over budget but a bit of haggling and man maths and you may get there - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334004288588?hash=item4dc434fc4c:g:am4AAOSw~g1gokJu

Now for the drink :D

I'd check the MOT history! It's about as bad as it gets and screams neglect. Advisory items left and repeated year after year including "underside corrosion" which was presumably covered over by the seller who claims "I wax oiled underneath the whole car to protect the good condition that it's in". It's also claimed to have been owned by a touring car mechanic

Never checked to be honest - sounds bloody dreadful so one to avoid :headbang:

Update, I purchased my Zed and it's great, drove back through the peak district, top down and it was glorious. It is the 2.5 and to be honest certainly quick enough.

It does however have a wet passenger carpet (behind seat) and I think it relates to the door membrane as water leaks behind door panel. Has anyone ever tackled this and what material did you use to stick down the membrane?

As above, welcome to the club. My missus has a 2.5 auto and loves it. Not driven a 3.0, but I would say the 2.5 is more than adequate for most occasions.
She did say it was a little quiet, so I retro-fitted the sound generator, took out one of the foam pieces and now she's happy.

A decent run that, back from the Peak District to Suffolk.
Look forward to the photographic proof. :poke: :D
