BMW z4 2008 ROOF PROBLEM

Hi guys

I'm new here so any help would be great.

I have a BMW z4 2008 model and a few months back I put the roof down and it got stuck.

I then had to pull the roof up manually and use the Allen key to tighten the hooks into the windscreen.

I tried to take the roof down yesterday to see if it miraculously worked again and as I held the button down the windows went down 1/4 of the way and it sounded as if the roof was going to come down until it stopped and nothing else happened.

The front corners of the roof moved upwards slightly and as i mentioned the windows came down a tad but nothing else. So I held the other button in and the widows went back up.

Has anyone had this issue before and can anyone offer some advice/suggestion as to what the problem could be?

P.s the space saver twisty knobs in the boot are in the correct position also.

Thanks and hopefully someone can shed some light for me!!

Thanks for the advice mate. Being from Essex as we both are I'm sure you know the going rates round here! Haha fingers crossed its not a motor issue!!

sounds like the roof motor

it happens to us all

there are some great threads on here - ranging from DIY options to the cheapest chap that can replace your motor

there is also a great mod that allows you to clean the drain holes more easily.

Thanks For the reply Chris. I'm not the most hands on person myself so I think I'd have to rule out DIY lol, but would be great to know any recommendations on who would be able to fix this for any less than BMW rates!
Called the dealer before, they want £90 per hour on the diagnostic machine and told me they would probably need it for 3 hours minimum before even doing any work on it ... Great!!

Thanks for the replies all. Really appreciated!
Ill be sure to let you know how I get on and post some pics!!

Ryan, Please do let us know how you made out. I think my roof motor crapped out today as well, almost 6 years to the day the car was sold new. I noticed it seemed to be getting slower in going up lately, so I wasn't shocked. I managed to put it up and lock it in place.

I'm going to check the fuse tomorrow, and then begin checking motor prices at various stealerships. Though I can turn a wrench, I'm no Shipkiller, so I think it's best I leave this to the pros (though likely an indi). I'm slightly overdue for Inspection II anyway.

I think I may ask for the old roof motor back. It might not hurt to have on hand for rebuilding, for next time...

I may juuuust be under the 6 year mark for my Certified pre-owned warranty. I wonder if the roof motor is included. Does anyone know? I can't seem to find anything on the BMW CPO website that mentions it, one way or the other.
