BMW tyre and shortfall insurance

Just picked up my new z4 on the weekend. I year old 3.0 auto with 19" rims.

Have not taken the tyre or shortfall insurance. But have a week or so if I change my mind.

What do people think of the tyre and shortfall insurance?

They're normally a waste of money but I'm quite tempted for this car by both of them.

hello :D

Tyre insurance - how many punctures have you ever had?

Shortfall - took it on mine for peace of mind more than anything else. Was reasonably priced too for the amount and length of cover :D

Tyre insurance is ok if the price is right, especially with 19" tyres.

Spec sounds awesome, where's the pics??

No pics yet. Will sort asap

Had two punctures in 20 odd years, but cost of 19" run flat tyros, and inability to repair them makes me think it worthwhile.

but you might be able to repair the run flats - guidelines have changed but it does depend on the manufacturer etc

Don't worry about that, once you've driven about on runflats for a while you'll ditch them anyway :)

Tyre Insurance - ask yourself
How much is the tyre insurance premium?
Does it cover just the tyre or the rim too?
Will it cover a car on non standard rims?

2 punctures in 20 years = 10% chance per annum. Say £250 for a tyre, so the premium needs to be £25 or less on the balance of risk.

Shortfall - similar. How much did you pay and what's it really worth and how much is premium? Again that helps on the risk

In answer to you question I do however think they are both a waste of money, but that's insurance for you. If you claim it was a great idea, if not then a waste, but you may sleep better.

Trickster - I picked up my new z4 two weeks ago and the dealer said I had a month to decide on whether to take out the shortfall insurance. I decided against the tyre insurance as I think your more likely to run out of tread before you run a flat. But the shortfall insurance is a good deal if the car gets written off 18mths to 3yrs from now. You would save money and the hassle of arguing about the 'real' value of the car with the insurance company, as they would pay up for a brand new car. With two weeks left to go to decide, I'm tempted as I had a car written off by an 18yr old before and the hassle afterwards was worse than the crash! how much did you get quoted?

Ronin

I cannot remember what I was quoted but I know I offered about £150 less and they accepted it!

I was offered the same when I bought the Audi. I didn't go for the tyre insurance because I thought there'd be too many conditions (get-outs). I was also offered alloy wheel insurance though @ £150 for 3 years which has proved good value. Don't know if they stil do it, Inchcape product.

I took both recently on 0% finance over the year, felt like a no-brainer idea. The GAP was piece of mind and although the forum will tell you to ditch the run flats i wont as i like the free space not having to carry a spare gives me, so the tyre deal seemed like a good precaution.

Check the Tyre Insurance, it's sold with RFT's but I used it to claim on a Falken 452 after I ditched the RFT's.

Not that I would ever condone such activity, but what stops you just puncturing the tyre yourself (eg. drive over a carefully positioned nail) as you get toward the minimum tread level and then getting them replaced for free?

From what I understand the insurance is c£300 and a tyre is c£200. So assuming four tyres over 3 years you're up by £500.

There is probably some clause about how worn the tyres are...

MikeS - interesting to know they will take offers as I was so busy getting money of the car I forgot to ask about discounts on the shortfall!

Trickster - have you made a decision yet?

TBH, I didn't pay for my GAP insurance, I just asked for it before I signed on dotted line and it included GAP+ which delas with minor dings and scratches. I think they gave it to me as I took out a bit of finance. Probably paid for it myself in the long run, but if I hadn't asked I wouldn't have got it.
