thanks for the warm welcoming. i live in Massachusetts. those rims were the 17 inch wheel package back then.i have replaced the conv top motor. that is a job takes me about 4 hrs [we charge 6hrs labor] and i do not look foward to doing it. hard and lots of chances to do paint damage.also if the roof is lite color, chance of marking it with the butal sealing seal. also how did you relocate the conv top motor.....

hi im new here, so if i am messing up sorry. just letting everyone know that i work at bmw dealership and have work for bmw for 42 years. If i can answer any questions please ask ...not saying i know everything but just want to help out.

Hi and a warm welcome from the Scottish Highlands. I used to work in the late nineties in Kennebunkport, Maine and did the occasional visit to Boston and Martha’s Vineyard. Beautiful places.

I have an 2010 Z4 M and wonder if there is any simple way to increase the speed slightly at which it is possible to open or close the roof. Currently it is about walking speed, something like 5mph and also is it possible to program the mechanism in such a way that it one isn’t required to hold the button and until it is fully opened or closed.

Any help is much appreciated.

Ron

i was born in maine.the cape is great place to summer at. so the roof mph limit is in the cvm and dme which cant at [dealership level] be changed.there is also concern wind bending the frame says bmw.bmw reasoning for the holding down the button on key fob or inside button is there is not any anti trapping. so having you hold the buttons down is the safety feature.

Rob, a SmartTop will sort both these issues for you. I bought mine mainly for the one touch opening/closing.

There was one n here for a very reasonable price the other day but sold very quickly. When o bought mine I decided new rather than 2nd hand as there’s not much in the price and the fetch a good 75%+ resale

Andy, I looked into the SmartTop option but read that several people experienced various hardtop problems and/ or car software issues leading to expensive and time consuming faults. Hence I am little hesitant in purchasing one. How long have you had it and did you have any issues?

Hey man - welcome to the Forum!

Regarding the roof motor, you should get in touch with Ross aka Bowser134. He used to work as a BMW mechanic for years, too, and now has his own garage named RBM. He’s relocated my roof motor within 1h without removing the roof. Definitely worth you catching up with him if you can and if he’s up for it.

I think that might be something you can reprogram with Carly? I know this YouTuber (itsjoel) did that with his e85 and raised the speed to ca 10 mph. Might work for you as well!

Rob, I honestly can’t recall any issues on here regarding these and roof issues, but I’ll stand corrected if there are. They’re one of the most desirable mods on here. As far as I can see, the main thing that puts people off is the cost and the limited ability to pick up 2nd hand. They regularly get £250 2nd hand. There was a bargain on here last week at £200.

I bought one a year ago and put it in my 23i, no issues. Took it out and reinstalled in the 35 the day after I got it home. The only issue I had was I didn’t have access to a laptop the first time and tried to program it via the indicator stalks which was a disaster so I borrowed a laptop and had it sorted in 5 minutes once I had the proper tools.

Installation/de installation is 15 mins or so.

I bought a smart top for £140 on eBay, that really was a great price, one hour to fit and gives quit a few other advantages over such as wing mirror folding on the key providing you the electric folding option on the car.

Not tried the roof opening while moving yet but may give that a go when the weather get better, the open / close off the key is a great benefit as long as the battery is good. :D

This gets raised often here and in other forums. After 10+ years of the E89, if there was any way to program the roof to do this via Carly or NCS or DIS etc, it would have been figured out by now. Many have tried. I too would love this feature without the expensive smarttop add-on but it's not going to happen unless another 3rd party device does it. I think even with the CA option, you still have to hold the key button to open/close the roof.
