BMW Scanner 1.4

It looks like the last time my laptop did an update it’s killed BMWScanner 1.4.
It’s running Windows 10 and it used to work just fine.
The shortcut cannot find the .exe file because it seems that Windows deletes the .exe because it thinks it has a virus in it.
I’ve tried downloading and installing it again from several different places but it’s always the same result.
Some YouTube videos go through an incredibly complicated process of going into test mode (which I tried and all went well up to about half way through the process when my list of options didn’t match when he had so I gave up).

I’m sure when I originally got it working it was easy.

I’m no computer expert sadly but does anyone have any ideas?

Just doing exactly the same thing myself after my old laptop died

Won’t run because it thinks there is a Trojan

Watching with interest

Windows 10 is end of life now, and no longer getting security updates (or won't be very soon). I'd advise not using it on a computer with an internet connection.

For software like this (and inpa/insta/ncs) I run windows 10 in a virtual machine (Google for more information , but essentially running Windows within Windows) with absolutely no internet connection.

I installed the software, got it all working, and then uploaded the virtual machine's hard drive to Google Drive. If it ever goes wrong, I just download the known-good image and start again. I'd suggest doing similar, personally, as it removes all of the update problems etc.

The other advantage is that, if you source an ISO/installer for an older version of Windows 10, lots of the more recent breaking changes won't be present

Think you need to reinstall the driver for it if you can find it thats what I had to do.
The above link describes Windows7 install but contains a link to get the required driver at

I didn’t even realise mine was Windows 10 until I started trying to fix it last night. Not sure what the next move might be now.

Got it working again by adding the folder the .exe file is located in to Windows defender as an exception. So it seems that windows thinks the scanner is a virus and removes it for you. Add it an exception and Defender will ignore it.

Now turn off updates!!

Now turn off updates!!
On a computer used for internet access, absolutely do not do this!

On an airgapped/offline computer that doesn't access the internet/you don't care if it gets hacked - go ahead. (But then it can't download updates anyway, so...)

Signed - an IT professional who's seen the impact of non-updated systems too many times

Agreed, but surely anyone using a laptop for car software won’t be using their everyday one? How many times has it been said in here: get yourself an old laptop and only use it for car stuff.
You’d have to be a bit daft to stick these diagnostic things on your main use IT surely? I’m an IT Luddite but even I’m not that daft!!

I agree - I'd hope it's not their primary machine too.

But I'd urge, even on a second laptop just for diagnostic uses, not to disable updates if it's connected to the internet. Instead, disable the network connection/don't connect to WiFi and use another device for googling error codes etc.

Good IT security isn't always convenient, but it's usually less hassle than the tidy up after a hack - like fighting to install old diagnostic software when you've lost the DVD, and all the download links online have expired, on a laptop where all the drivers got taken down several years ago etc...

Just don't connect machines without updates to the internet :)

I had exactly the same problem the other day, so I suspect Windows defender had been updated somewhere and was flagging the executable as dangerous.
This is what I did to get round it.
Disconnect from any network you are attached to.
Uninstall the current bmw scanner you have.
Turn off your virus checking
Re install bmw scanner again
Go back into your virus checker/defender and mark the bmw scanner folder as safe
Fire up the virus scanner, and reconnect to any network.

Basically when you ran scanner, it thought there the .exe was dodgy so quarantined it. If you reinstalled the software, the same thing would happen over and over again.

You just need to tell your machine not to worry about the contents of the scanner folder.
