BMW Performance 6-Pot Brake Kit

Spoke to the guy today. The prices have sadly gone up a bit. The kit was 740 without discs, but is now 960 without, or 1200 with new discs.

Also, the only pads available at the moment are the Brembo pads that come with the kit. Doing some research on 1-series forums, they guys over there are still finding these insufficient when it comes to track work, giving up after 3-4 laps like the OEM Z4M pads. So until they get a Pagid RS29 or similar available for this kit, it looks like I'll have to give them a miss. Ant said they are working with Pagid to get these available, but couldn't give a timeframe... :(

Shame really as I was looking forward to getting a set.
 
Even with lines and dot 4.1? :S How much are you using the brakes! ;) If in doubt...Flat out. ;)

I like the gold actually.
 
My brakes are fine at the moment - they haven't given out even with some serious abuse at Spa. I'm running Dot4, braided lines, and Pagid RS29s. However, the feel of the pedal isn't great after some heavy abuse, even if the car still stops...

However, although the control, bite etc may be better with the Brembo kit, I don't want to take a backward step if the current pad compound isn't up to the higher temperatures needed for track abuse.
 
Andy, I have a kit for the Z4M with a proven caliper, which is miles better than the BMW Performance one, with many suppliers of brake pads and I am happy to discuss options. Call me...

A couple of questions-

What about rear brakes?

How will you preserve bias if it is only front brakes?

Does the kit bolt up or require modifications to the car?
 
If we're talking about the BMW Perf kit:

- rears are coming soon, once a bracket has been designed.

- once rears are added this will take care of balancing of the system - although tbh, road cars are so heavily front biased anyway, that this is unlikely to be a major factor for 95% of people. Certainly reports of people only running the fronts at this stage have all been positive, and not suffered any ill effects.

- the kit bolts up, with the addition of the bracket from Speed Religion. If you buy the kit direct from BMW, you'll need to fabricate your own brackets to make the kit fit.
 
So you're looking at around £1500 for a front & rear kit, that may or may not be any better than what you've got on at the moment.

Would you not be better just getting an AP/Brembo/Movit/Stoptech caliper solution that lets you use the standard discs?

This bbk isn't the best looking and the colour is awfull, but if is does the job better, i will consider it (its lots cheaper than AP/Movit/Brembo/etc). Untill now the references about this 6-pot kit aren't that good :(.

Those Pagid, are they really bad for you paint and rims? Doing the Nurburing with the std setup, but they can't cope :(.
 
I'm seeing mixed reviews about this kit too. I'm now looking at a different option as I'm not convinced on the value being offered...

Kasteel, not had a problem with paint or rims with the Pagid RS29s. Not sure how the brakes can affect paint, unless you mean the finish on the rims themselves, but no problems here. I've got Pagid RS29s, and AP Racing fluid with braided lines, and the brakes are outstanding really. They certainly have no problem holding up, but feel and consistancy could still be improved with a BBK.
 
sizspeed actually in reply to your question, your not sure how brake pads can effect paint youd be very suprised!! i had a fq400 before my z4m and used some very high performance carbotech pads i think they were called, the brake dust that came off the pads would stick to the car and had corrosive properties and could and would damage the paint on the car and wheels. so when im buying performance pads i make sure they dont use these materials, id bet my bottom dollar is you asked pagid the top range pads will have the properties that can damage your paint. (wheel and car paint).
 
Hmmm.... I see what you mean. Either way I'm running the RS29, which is pretty much their top-line track pad, and my paint is fine. I've also used Carbopads when i needed to replace them at the 'Ring one weekend and this was all that was available. Both are high-temperature track pads. My wheels have a few pits in them now (corners of the spokes etc), but tbh thats no different to any of my road cars I've owned in the past as well. If you're going to track your car and drive it that hard, I think you have to expect some degredation to the wheels - even if its just from stone chips etc.

My bodywork paint is fine though. :)
 
yeh well i track mine, currently using the stock setup and the brake dust was everywhere, but suprisingly the brakes stood up very very well! but then again i cant really say theyd do to well on the ring!! so how does the z4m perform on the ring and did it hold its own well??
 
@ Sixspeed, i know a few who are driving with Carbon Loraine, really a great track pad, but it's really terrible for the paint :'(
 
PF pads were the worst! Dusty!! And ruin'd my paint. Never again.

What was the outcome of the other call you made andy lol...Fishing for other solutions.
 
I've not had any bodywork paint damaged by brake dust on the pads I've used...

Are we talking about bodywork paint, or rim paintwork?

Aliv6 - a potential solution using Porsche Brembo calipers. More to come on that one after a bit more investigation...
 
Beedub, the Z held its own at the 'Ring very nicely. Mine's not standard of course, but in standard form it's quite capable. The brake pads are really the first main weak point you'll reach, but a simple pad change will sort this well enough. Otherwise it's all good, and with a few tweaks, even better :D

There's a few Youtube videos out there of various laps I've done in mine. You should be able to search for them either through my Youtube login (andysixspeed), or most should be tagged with 'ur02slo', 'z4m' 'nurburgring' etc...
 
Just put EBC Red Stuff onto mine which although a bit away from Yellow Stuff, they should be a little better from cold. I hope they don't do any damage to the rims etc. We'll see i guess. Interestingly i got new tyres and both from valves were melted badly which can only be from the 'Ring i reckon. I'm very careful to come in each lap and let the car have a few minutes to cool a little so it's a bit of a surprise. Have you ever had issues like that Andy?
 
Andy did you ever do a lap of the ring with Std brakes? How did they fair? We'll be making the anual trip over later this yr and don't want to get there and run out of brakes 1/2 way through the lap.
