BMW Main Stealers - is it me?

Last year my wife bought a 5 series touring (estate) from a BMW main dealer as an approved BMW – it’s been back twice for work recall (the dreaded exhaust sensor) and MOT and a couple of little niggles we found in the first few weeks of ownership.

About a month ago the dealership called us to say the car was getting towards an oil service and would I like to book it in – something about the connective drive and BMW assist keeping them updated.

I was a little reluctant; I’m finding it hard to bond with them in the same way I did with the Ford dealership I was with for more than 30 years – we only moved to BMW via the Zed when my Focus RS reached 200K and Ford had nothing else I fancied to replace it. On the last visit the receptionist walked away from us because my question was ‘stressing’ her too much and left the service manager to deal with us!

Now when I booked the car in for an oil change I asked how much – I managed not to choke on the phone at the £129 oil and filter quote (well they have to fund the marble floors; complementary coffee and car washing somehow). We dropped the car in this morning and the receptionist read the key fob; printed the list of work and said sweetly that will be £534. In my calm voice I pointed out that the quote was £129 – oh yes she said but we do other filters at the same time. I did inquire why it was not mentioned to me by the call centre – it’s because they didn’t have the key! .. but I say; reading from the page she’s printed: pollen filter; air filter; fuel filter ‘LINKED TO OIL SERVICE’ so you always do them together. Well I waited for the non forthcoming reply; you can’t as they say, argue with stupid! or was this a deliberate omission when they they called me to book the work?

Now I know I’m over 60; retired; grumpy and pedantic; and don’t look as sharp as many other BMW drivers (I’ve more boiler suits than business suits now!) but is it me? Am I approaching this all wrong or are main dealers deliberately deceptive?

Next stop is the local indie although I know my way round cars well enough to change the oil and other filters myself but can I reset the service computer? – if so what software do I need .

They are all robbing gits, but the £129 quote for oil and filter change is perfectly reasonable from a dealer. My indy charges £109 for that, so not far off the mark at all.

The extras is just ridiculous and you should refuse to pay as they didn't quote for these when you originally asked them. All phone calls are recorded for training purposes etc, so ask for the recording of the call.

I think you’ve had a bad experience - shop around! Not all main dealers are like that, but sadly some are. The nearest one to me is, but there are a couple of other franchises not *that* far away so I choose to use them instead

Pretty outrageous.
I'd refuse to pay anything above the quote they gave you, if indeed they did not initially make it clear that you may incur extra charges.
Demand to speak to the manager and indicate you were not fully informed and the quote was not transparent.

You could always save a few bob in the future by doing your own oil service. It's DEAD easy on any car, except maybe a Bugatti Chiron
Invest in a PELA pump and a filter replacment tool.

Fortunately we had the conversation at the time we dropped the car - I told them oil and filter only. Fuel; air and cabin filter will go further according to BMW tolerances on the service sheet anyway so I can shop around.

Picked the car up about an hour ago and they say they have emailed the call centre manager to let his team know - my ar$e!

Chris_D can you update the service history of the car though without being a BMW dealer? - the service record is on the car or the key now

I'm pretty sure Carly

I'm pretty sure Carly caters for it for newer beemers. Someone with a newer bimmer and carly could chime in to clarify perhaps?

Out of interest OP, would that be one of the main dealers along the A47? Got my 335D on an astounding deal (right place, right time) from Listers in Kings Lynn and have to say they have been faultless so far, with that car, my Z and wifey's 220D convertible.
Not had any experience of Cooper's at Costessey yet?

I am also looking out for a good Indy for November onwards, when my Z runs out of it's 5-year maintenance pack. Any recommendations gratefully received.

Yes it might well be! Indie in Bury (Suffolk) has been recommended to me so I might give them a try or its boiler suit on if I can update the cars service record and get rid of the dash message.

also interesting that oil+oil filter is only £129 and the airfilter+pollen filter+fuel filter is £405,- (over 3 times as much)

Unless I've misunderstood what you are trying to do, you can reset the dash message yourself to get rid of the red 'service' symbol and set the next service date.
Can't remember the exact sequence of button presses (as I only do it once a year  ), So have a look on YouTube here

I never go to main dealers. I do it myself or Indie.
The only time I've been to the main dealers in Sheffield is for a new key and a pack of trim clips I couldn't find anywhere else, Couldn't believe how clinical and fake it was, absolutely souless!

Thanks obewan - I'll have a search around and see if anythings out there for a 5 series with idrive.

stupot1. If it were a few years older I wouldn't be bothered about getting in there and doing it but don't want to take value out of it by not being able to show any history - bit of a catch 22 really!

Go and buy the oil it’s £69 for the 5 Series 2.0 d I get mine done every year. I have an Indy do mine and they charge £112 inc VAT

Ive just had the 335xD serviced - its second and its cost me £553 :(
Oil, Micro Filter, Air Filter (Intake Filter Jargoned up) Fuel Filter and glass clean.

I should have asked them to clean my eye sockets while they had my eyes out!

Only ever gave the local main dealer one chance. They charged me nearly £900 for an ins 1 and gave me back my Zed filthy. It was spotless when it went in.

Funnily enough I've never been back. Local ndie is great and knows the S54 better than the stealers as well. :D

£900

How on this earth did they justify that?
I was new to BMW and ///M ownership at the time and knew no better. That's how. :fightwall:

Didn't happen twice though.

I do all my maintenance myself, and usually keep my cars for a long, long time, so I don't worry about not having perfect maintenance records from a dealer. I do the maintenance for myself, and also found, with Volvo at least, that their shop quality was no better than my own. It takes me more time to figure it out but it gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing I did the work, I get to know the car, and with forums like these to fall back on, I have not yet been stumped by something I couldn't fix. And the savings have been (almost) astronomical to boot.

Thanks all

but it gets better - just been to move the 5 series. Since I only had the oil and filter changed it still needs the other filters to complete the service - the receptionist assured us it would continue to count down on the dash until they were done - fair enough.

It had 300 miles to service showing when we dropped it at the stealers yesterday. My wife drove it 20 miles home and this morning it shows 'SERVICE 120 MILES SINCE DUE' - where did those 400 miles go?

I don't know ........ but I'll can't wait to hear what explanation BMW can give me :? :x
