It's a very interesting comparison and conclusion. I just wish the M235i looked better. It's almost like BMW made it look so ordinary on purpose. If I has about 35k to spend I would get a nearly new 435i over the M235i.

The B4 vs M4 is a very close call. Just depends ultimately what floats your boat and how you intend to use the car. I personally wouldn't look at an M235i if I was in the market for one of the other two. I don't see them as direct rivals to the M235i at all.

Which is a shame as from a driving perspective the M235i looks to be right on the money.
Jeremy Clarkson wrote a piece about the M4 in The Times just recently, and criticised it for being numb and artificial because of all the electronic aids it now has.
And when he asked it to do a 'big skid' when going round a corner it was absolutely hopeless. Yet the M cars from the past were very good at doing this.

He clearly wasn't doing it very well then because it's as driftable as any other M car is.

The electronic aids thing is an interesting point though. However I don't think there are many cars that don't come with them these days. If they are going to put them on that's fine but they should allow you to switch them ALL off.

Nope, but it looks like the M235i could be a good option if you're £25k short of being able to afford either of the others.

As much as I love the styling of the M, I really see myself swinging towards the Alpina.

Mainly due to the want for an estate, of which they don't do an M variant of.

Re Clarkson, Chris Harris managed to get the back end out without any issues.

More telling is the AutoCar review of the M3 vs the D3. The D3 was faster round a lap!!!

Yes that's certainly true.
