BMW M4 - Test Drive Report

Official times I have is 4.3s for 0-62, according to the brochure. Not sure if that's manual box though. I'm sure it'll be quicker in auto with launch control
Yes the Manual gearbox in the E92 was 4.8 and the DCT 4.6 so its possible that the new DCT does it in 4.1 which is still awesome I reckon

Love the seats.

Wheels look a little small but that might just be the photos. I'm sure in the flesh it looks lovely.

All the press photos I've seen had it in a sort of metallic phoenix yellow (obviously not but that's the closest I can describe it to) and that looked great.

Excellent write up as well! Nice to hear from someone who has driven one.

Ah - that would be the colour there then lol

Am I the only person that thinks £60k is actually pretty reasonable? A 2.0d 3 series can stretch you £40k these days, my 125d listed at nearly £32k with a relatively light spec and how much would a new 991 cost you? 50% again? It's all beside the point anyway. What matters more than the window price is how hard it's going to depreciate. I see that figure being pretty scary, especially if BMW do what they did with the M5 and start punting out model support discounts and cheap lease deals while the model is still relatively young.

You didn't put it in sport mode at all? When you put the power train in sport mode it essentially bypasses the back box on these cars and sounds 1000x better

x2, I think £60k is pretty reasonable.

Cracking car but............... 60 big ones for a 3 series.......
That was one of the issues when we looked at buying a E92 M3 new it was working out at £55k and when you sat in it you may as well have been in a 318d not that there is anything wrong with a 318d but the interior feels no different yet its over twice the price to buy.

Even when I eventually purchased one used at £30k it never felt special enough or worth the money for me but we all see things differently, in terms of performance though the new one does offer the goods for sure but it will only ever be a 3 or 4 series and you cant change that sadly.

I looked online last night after this, and there is a 20K authorised contribution on a 640. Imagine how much more you could negotiate

Heard one bombing round canary wharf today...
He was revving and blipping and it was a hideous yellow colour.... Not a fan... Sounded like a boy racer car and all the fins and vents and "aero" parts look chavvy... E90 still outclasses it

Spot on. The depreciation curve will steep. I wouldn't be interested in brand new unless I got at least £10k off list. At least that way my depreciation reduces from horrific to normal.

So do you think the 20K the dealers are giving off a lease on a 640D is enough to offset the huge depreciation or does it need to be more off, like 30K?

When I sold my 650 convertible, 2 months after it was new, it was. £72K list and I got £51 for it......

Mostly the more expensive the list price the worse it depreciates but 20k sounds pretty good to me to be honest and I really like the 640d as a package but inevitably it will continue to depreciate at a strong rate, iirc the old 635d was a killer too for losing money versus its original list price.

No didn't try sport. I can only imagine how good that would have been

It makes a massive difference. My day at work has been brilliant. Been driving the M4 this morning and then an M6 convertible this afternoon and to too it off this weekend I'm driving a m235i :) happy days.

I looked at one yesterday.....and also a M 235. £65k against £40K. Only £15k for my 35i. On a 4 year lease....£750 a month on M4 and £300 ish on the 235.

Going back today.

Never had an M car before. Service package is £1000

Tyre, gap and dent/scratch protecting at £1800 is worth it?

The black 235 has an awful M Performance body kit on it....and writing on the side. One in the showroom has only standard nav though not the professional.

Would welcome your thoughts on what car is riskier to buy in terms of depreciation....the £400 or so a month difference isn't the main concern
