BMW M Mobility Kit

I've had a drill bit puncture my left rear tire last Sunday. I tried the M Mobility kit and followed the instructions to the letter but when I went for that short drive to distribute the sealant a heard a loud pop coming from the tire and it quickly deflated. I limped back to the hotel on the rim and the left rear side was a mess. Sealant all over the place. I got the car to the dealership the next morning and they replaced the tire and I got it detailed as well. A very nice job they did. :D

My question is: Is this M Mobility kit any good? :scratchhead: I suspect that the hole created by the drill bit was too big for the sealant to be effective. :(

Cheers.

Most likely the hole was a little too big, or else the sealant provided by BMW is not very good :idunno: I may have to go check on mine and see if there is any type of expiration date on the can which may also be a part of the equation.

Exactly the reason why I carry a compact spare kit! Don't want my weekend drives in the middle of nowhere turning into a nightmare... :driving:

It's probably the size of the hole. I had a puncture once with a car with normal tires, and the sealant was OK for a nail. With my E9), however, I was happy to have runflat tires since the hole was more than a centimeter wide because my tire ate a metal object 1,5cm by 3mm by 15cm.

Think the hole must have been too big. I used it when mine went flat and it worked fine. Although I did find out the cigarette lighter was broken and had to stretch it from another car! :D

This brings up a good question. Should you first remove the nail prior to using the sealant? pmeloche, did you remove the drill bit? Fortunately I've never had to use mine, but this would be good to know.

I did remove it and then I put it back in place as per the instructions in the manual. Like I said, the part where the sealant is injected in the tire worked fine. It's when I did the short ride to distribute the sealant that I ran into this problem. :( Fortunately, driving on the deflated tire ruined it but the rim was not damaged. That would have set me back another $500-$600. :o

It is recommended to verify the expiration date on the sealant bottle. However, my car is a March 2008 production so I did not bother checking it. I assumed it was fine. Maybe I should have. It would suck that this bottle would not be good for more than six months. :x

I think pulling the drill out in the first place was a mistake and perhaps left in untouched it would have sealed, although a drill is an odd object with it's grooves designed to clear material are probably just as good at letting sealant past.

Shame to have had to waste a tyre, but good job the rim lived.
