... As BMW is enhancing its car production in the US, it is unlikely that US will be witnessing such a layoff.

I don't think so enfield and I quote from the article...

...and returning to the main topic of the thread..... :)
I recall reading somewhere not that long ago either an article or a post here about BMW pushing suppliers to lower prices and perhaps product quality... :x I guess employee reduction was also in their play book as well.

Problem is, BMW like every one else is fighting a competive market, you have more car manufacturers making larger range of cars, in Europe because of the takeover of many car companies you have the like of Audi,VW, Seat etc all sharing parts to keep prices down and profits up, in BMW market they are not just fighting Merc for sales as was traditional, they now have Audi and Lexus to compete with,,,

The problem every manufacturer has in Europe is rising wage costs, in this I mean, longer holidays, employee rights, health and safety issues, shorter working hours, it all has to be paid for.

You Americans look on the bright side you havent had the invasion of the french cars yet,,, Renault. Peugoet, Citreon etc,

In fact we have. Renault & Peugoet were here in the 80's and early 90's. Peugoet were brought in by Chrysler before Daimler "partnered" with them. Renault quickly became known for some cheap POS cars, even at ridiculously low prices.

Renault, Peugoet and Citreon were here in the 60's and 70's but never sold well and in the area where I live (SE PA) those dealership went away by the early 80's. I do remember seeing some Renaults in the 90's but there were no dealers near where I live. I could be wrong but I was thinking one of the reasons that Peugoet and Citreon went away was because those cars did not meet certain US safety standards.

The Citreon dealer in Atlanta Georgia was selling these in the 1960's.... :(

They came in any color you wanted as long as it was grey.

I know these cars (2CV) came off the US market due to safety standards that the Citreon would not meet or least that is what the Atlanta dealer told me...

As a "brit" who visits the states quite a bit, i dont think I have ever seen a french car, so I assumed they didnt sell them, if they do they arent many.
