BMW Insured Warranty

My 07' Z4 M Roadster has done 29k miles, full BMW service history and the warranty is about to run out - it needs an Inspection 2 in another 4k miles or so

Should I;
A) Extend the warranty for £528 and pay for the inspection 2 service with BMW
B) Leave the warranty, and get the inspection 2 service done with the service centre I work for at COST price parts & labour (aka. VERY cheap, but with an Audi stamp in the book)

I use the car for short journeys once or twice a week, then long runs at the weekend, it's left on my driveway but occasionally goes in the garage (more often in the garage over winter).

I only have 3 days to make a decision, please recommend as you see fit.

P.S. - don't really know when I'm going to sell the car, maybe in 6 months... maybe 2 or 3 years...

Personally, an Inspection II stamp from a BMW dealer or indie would probably be better viewed than one from an Audi dealership. I'd extend the warranty too. I'm over £1500 up on mine this year. If something goes pop, it's not going to be cheap.

The warranty can always be reinstated.

Would agree with Stuart though about the servicing.

I'm going to look at http://www.bartleyuk.com/ when mines due early next year.

Inspection I would have been at about 22 - 25k miles, so there is no way insp II can be due at 33 ???

It had it's inspection 1 done on the 27/9/11 at 21297 miles

My dilemma is that it is going to be so cheap to get the service done at Audi... do you think I will end up getting having to sell the car for £1000 less because of this?

So far I've not had to touch warranty for anything, but I think my real worry is what I was told about Z4 Ms if the engine's go pop, it can't have parts replaced - it has to go back to HQ - £20k for a new engine? The warranty only covers invoice value (£15.5k). Has this happened to many people? baring in mind I'd have to dish out £5k in addition is it really going to be worth it?

I have a feeling you might be right - plus the price they're quoting looks pretty strong.

Which would mean the next service would just be an oil service.

I thought it was inspection 1 which was cheaper than inspection 2.

Or am I muddled??
It goes...
  • Running in service
  • Oil service
  • Inspection 1
  • Oil service
  • Inspection 2
  • Oil service
  • Inspection 1
  • Oil service
  • Inspection 2
  • Oil service
...ad infinitum

Also crap abut having parts replaced on the engine. Apart from the Vanos they are a very simple engine and unless you are really unlucky like mmm-five then shouldn't be a problem. mmm-five also suggests that the tech that looked at his car could well have contributed to the engines demise.

Total engine failure is rare I would say.

I binned my warranty - the 4 occasions i tried to use it, only one was covered and that was only a seal that would have cost about 75 quid fitted. One was exterior trim (not covered) one interior (not covered) one a coil spring (covered but then not covered as it was within "tolerance" defined in the small print somewhere)

A well-maintained car with just 33,000 miles should be solid. Of course something big could go wrong, but how likely is that? After all, if it was very likely, the warranty cost would be much higher.

At over £500 per year for warranty, I'd self-insure. After only a couple of years you'll be £1000 up which would pay for most non-catastrophic failures.

If I were buying a 2nd hand car (as I did with my Z 6 months ago), I'd be looking for a) full BMWSH, b) indie BMWSH, c) reputable garage SH (such as Audi), d) back-street garage, LOL!

Unless there's a massive saving over an indie, I'd go that route.

Thanks for the hints guys, nice finding out it's only an oil service due soon!

I suppose it's just the warranty then... seeing as it can be added again at a later date, and she has done pretty low mileage (noted DR-Z) I think I'll cancel it tomorrow so long as I get the full refund (14 day cooling-off period).

My view...

My 32k 07 Roadster has it's warranty run out today and is due an oil service in 600 miles which will be at a local BMW Specialist (A1 in Stevenage)

Dealer bought with AUC ( it had an o2 sensor replaced under warranty in the first 12 months) and after the first year year I paid (last year) £800 IIRC for warranty, no work has been required so you might say I'm £800 out of pocket.

I've decided that since the cheapest (driveline only) warranty I could get was £486 with a £250 excess that I may as well self insure.

If I have to pay over £736 in "warranty" repairs in the next 12 months I'll lose out - any less I win.

Only myself to blame if it all goes wrong :-)

So mutual verdict is;

- Forget the warranty unless it's sub £500 for Named Component (anything mechanical)
- Get it serviced at an indie unless you can get it done CONSIDERABLY cheaper elsewhere, or for a similar price at a BMW dealer.

I just rechecked the prices and found I'd included their emergency cover so costs without emergency cover are:

£0 excess/£100 excess/£250 excess

Comprehensive 942/782/632

Named Component 775/648/528

Driveline Only 585/494/408

Different figures but for me the same conclusion
