BMW iDrive car-tastrophie

It amazes me how they can let it out of the workshp like that...what did they think - you wouldn't notice?

Shitty poor service, and the YTS kid who did that wants shooting!

I know... very worrying. I think they may have broken a clip or something, I can wiggle that bit of the bumper back and forth a good inch and a half in and out - is this normal? Could someone check?

Thanks!

The Z is going back in today, the replacement antenna arrived early.

Would really appreciate it if someone could advise on the rear bumper thing I mentioned. Where the corner of the bumper meets the wheel-arch, just see if there is any play in it pushing it 'into' the car, or whether it is solid. I'm certain there should be a fixing there that they have broken or not refitted.

There is no play in mine. There is a clip there that others have reported breaking easily when taking off/refitting bumpers.

Typical, just got a call to say replacing the antenna did not fix the problem :(

I will be checking the bumper is solid when I get it back tonight!

You mentioned in your original post that the iDrive didn't work on the with the online functions, what did it say when you try to access those functions was it a searching for network or low signal or something else?

I can't remember the exact terminology, but it was something along the lines of "Unable to access the service at this time" - constantly.

I get network unavailable messages from time to time... usually the time I want to use it, because I'm behind a major hill or building and the signal is crap. The access service one I've had now and then and I've always assumed(?) that this was due to the bmw services being broken or under maintenance. It will be interesting to learn how this one pans out for you, hopefully positively.

Interesting Maniac, I have never got a network error message. I always thought it was more likely to be a BMW server-side issue, so I called the ConnectedDrive people first but they were very quick to say there was nothing wrong on their side.

The last guy who was managing the repair said they suspected it was a problem with the aerial being able to make a connection to the network, but there not being enough signal strength to actually pass data. Which sounds feasible, but if the antenna didn't fix the problem... I don't know what next.

Thanks for the answer on the bumper by the way.

I remember seeing a post on here somewhere about accessing a hidden menu which told you the signal strength. I'll have a look.

Found it somewhere else...http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287869

You might want to check it to see what it shows when you get the car back. Make sure that new antenna is working ok.

OK, so I think there is definitely something wrong. In a place where I normally get full signal on my phone (though it drops to 4/5 inside the car) I am only getting 30/100 signal strength. SO if it isn't the antenna, perhaps the wiring between the unit and the antenna?

Actually 30/100 isn't that bad. I get that in the city when I get full strength on the mobile. Thing is you can't compare it with the mobile because its (probably) from a different provider. My phone is O2, yet the car iDrive uses T-Mobile (EE) and given they have different masts in different areas the signal strengths rarely match.

So at 30/100 you still can't use BMW online portal etc?

EDIT: Just been out to check mine which shows 20/100 and works fine (SNR -49DB)

I got a call yesterday to say that BMW had given them "some more diagnostic procedures to perform" so the car is going back in for 2 more days on Monday.....

yay but not yay a in the same sentence. Out of curiosity (as your car is later and is slightly different in hardware for idrive to mine) does your display show a NAD/SNR figure (this is signal attenuation/distortion/interference)? Mine does and the norm is around -42db which is ok. Driving to areas that are very built up it drops below -113db which is really high levels of interference/signal distortion (even though signal still shows 30/100 ish and that can result in all sorts of messages about network being unavailable etc.

Your picture makes me think this is more account related or some sort of browser malfunction because its less about signal and more about it not being able to load the pages.I suspect a full software reload is probably on the cards again. Quite why it went this way in the first place tho....

I was curious about that, because mine doesn't show an SNR figure anywhere, must be slightly different soft/firm/hardware versions.

I completely agree with you on the account/browser related thing, and that is exactly what I told them when I took it in. That's the problem now-a-days though, you have traditionally trained technicians trying to debug highly complex computer systems, and their default positions is just to replace parts until it starts working again!

Sounds like typical (in my opinion) BMW fault finding to me - they have no idea what it is, and keep stringing you along till they get lucky, or you give up.

If it wasnt a warranty case, they'd probably charge you for each failed attempt as well.

But I could be biased in my views....
