BMW i8 Chris Harris

Sounds a bit disappointing really. Almost sterile and uninvolved from a driving perspective. Such a shame.
It was never going to be a hooligan with less than 250 bhp going to the rear wheels. I think it looks stunning though and the whole concept is well resolved.
I'm sure there will be an i8M at some point with a twin turbo 4 pot putting out 350 bhp or so.

It's not so much the hooliganism aspect (isn't it 361 bhp with the elec motor as well?), the car has plenty of torque, but the lack of feel on the steering and lack of responsiveness is a shame. Plenty of cars with <250bhp which are still involved drives.

Given that hybrid technology is still very new and many sport car fans are sceptical, I was hopeful that BMW would make a driver orientated car.

Yes I totally get where your coming from but all the extra electric power is going to the front axel so it's only 230 that goes to the rear wheels. If all 361 bhp went to the rear wheels it would be a totally different beast.

Of course....fair point.

I guess I was expecting more of an M3 / M4 type hybrid, whereas this seems to be more of a fast cruiser, maybe a 645d type replacement?

I think it's a bit too small for that, the rear seats on an i8 offer similar comfort to those on a 911. I do think there will be a faster version but I think BMW are going for "green" with this car
before out and out performance. Harris said it didn't respond how he thought it would which I think meant, it doesn't hang the tail out when you boot it because of the huge wedge of torque pulling the front end and not allowing the rear to catch up. And as he said, it blew a WRX away exiting tight corners so it's obviously not just a cruiser. 0-60 4.4 seconds.
If this is progress and BMW's take on the future then I'm really happy. Have you seen the crap VW have made?!

I meant more from a driving perspective than actual practicality.

It's obviously a quick car, but there's a lot more to an enjoyable drive than acceleration. If this is the future, I may be sticking to <2012 sports cars...(if I'm allowed).

Yes I know what you mean, future regulation might make our cars extinct!! Or just too expensive to run with road tax rising the way it will on less economic cars.

Its an looks incredible car that will change the industry. You can't expect it to have a fire breathing V8 character, fact is it will keep up with an M3 and do 100mpg at the same time… Its the future and generation 1, its very very impressive for a first go…

Used to really like the i8 but have gradually gone off it sorry :)

Got bored and switch off before the end of that. Never a good sign.

Hopefuly a few tweeks will have us all raving about it. Sounds a little like the early reports on the Maca 12C. Too much tech to take in for this type of car. Give it six months.
