Bmw help me

Hello everyone,

I have a BMW F10 528i (2010/2011) with Electric Power Steering (EPS).

The problem started after I replaced the steering rack electric motor. The replacement motor came from a right-hand-drive (RHD) steering rack and was installed on my left-hand-drive (LHD) steering rack. During disassembly, no alignment marks were made.

I am now experiencing the following symptoms:

  • The steering wheel continuously oscillates left and right as soon as the engine starts.
  • There is no power steering assistance, and the steering is very heavy.
  • The yellow EPS/steering warning light is on.
  • I have replaced both the electric motor and the EPS control module.
  • The EPS has not yet been coded, and the steering angle sensor has not been calibrated.

I would like to know:

  1. Could this problem be caused solely by the lack of EPS coding or steering angle sensor calibration?
  2. Does the electric motor need to be mechanically synchronized with the steering rack before installation?
  3. Could the steering position sensor or encoder have been damaged or misaligned during disassembly?
  4. What checks would you recommend before replacing the entire steering rack?

Any advice or experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If it’s anything like the E85 Z4 then the LHD and RHD motors rotate in different directions. You probably need to fit a LHD unit to your car.
