BMW 'health checks'

Cars back! Although I did phone them about 10ish this morning and ask if they had made sure the USB in the glovebox was disconnected. Not saying they hadn't but about 2 and a half hours after that he car had taken the update!
Whoops! So picked it up just after 3 as that was it all done. Nothing else to report and the cost for almost 2 days of trying to code it.........£120! I could have gone the warranty route but for the cost invloved I thought nah, plus I'm gonna try and reclaim it via BMW becuase the handbrake is an integral part of the car and for it to fail so easily due to a wheel speed sensor error and need a software update to cure it is not ideal at all.
As for the health check it had now vanished off the bill and seen as I never got the video the guy took, I can only assume they decided against doing anything else.

vehicle health check is free and is basically a quick check to wear and tear items which they could potentially make money on. this is why they do one for free. to see if they can make some more out of you if anything needs replacing.
for example my car was in for some work and they said the 2 front tyres were a bit low and could do with replacing now or soon. so i told them i had some already (even though I didn't) and i was getting them fitted elsewhere, i promptly ordered 2 off the internet and had them fitted a couple of weeks later elsewhere for £20.
other items they would check are brakes, etc so they could sell you new pads.

I had mine in last week for replacing acoustic insulation due to rodent damage (another recent thread if you care to look!) and they did the health check. I was not charged for it.
They found 2 nails in the nearside rear tyre and suggested that I would probably need a new tyre. I monitored the pressure over the next day, no loss at all, then took it to my local Tanvic tyre centre. They took the tyre off and ascertained that the two small nails had not penetrated far into the tread and removed them. Problem solved for £16, better than £200+ for a new tyre.

It was more the fact it was listed as a labour cost item hence why I enquired with the service dept prior to leaving the car with them. If it had been listed and charged on the final invoice I wouldn't have paid if But like I said it wasn't even on the invoice and I never got any of the video etc that was taken. So I assume that after the hassle and he fact that I had said not to bother they decided to do just that.

My mate who used to run AC at Seafield, Edinburgh said that although it should be free there are more and more garages trying to charge customers for it.

If I had been under the 3 year original warranty the I wouldn't have paid but it's now under the extended Warranty and the excess is £150 so it made sense to pay £120. If it hadn't of been able to be coded and had needed the new boxes then it had been agreed it would have become a warranty claim. And they confirmed until they could get it to accept the update, they wouldn't charge me.

Wife had an R56 Cooper - a few months out of warranty the ECU for the DSC failed. BMW kindly offered a third of the cost - car had done less than 20,000 miles!
Extended the warranty on my 123d for 1 year, but when renewal came around I decided not to renew - after all what was going to fail that would cost more than the warranty extension (£400 ish IIRC). 3 or 4 months later I found out - the starter motor which cost about £600!
Mind you I blame stop/start for that!Hope the experience doesn't make you think about changing your signature!

To be honest with the way the update was going I was ready to change the signature........but once I realised what might be the issue and it all went well I was happy.
None of my cars have ever been checked for a warranty. I've always had to advise if it's got one, even when some were only months old! My E88 BMW did replace my roof and I paid a whole £180 for it when it got a hole in it. Turned out it was a design issue which had been noticed and rectified but only a recall was issued in SA and the US because they thought people wouldn't have their roofs down enough in other parts of the world to iniciate such a costly replacement. So I really should have had to stump up anything.
It wasn't the best of fittings and it leaked water when I washed the car after that
and this is why I now have a E89......with a great sounding engine and exhaust

It sounds like it was all a bit of a pain, so glad to hear it all ended OK - after all how could "Angie4m" be a Mini owner (unless it was in addition to a Z4......)! :lol:
