BMW Genius?

From what I understand BMW are set to employ 300 people as BMW geniuses across their sales group. The idea being promoting and explaining the many different innovative features BMW bring to the table in the form of technology on their cars.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought this was the job of the salesman?

I bet Apple are a little peeved BMW stealing their idea :D

haha yeah, you'd expect the sales team to know those details!

"Oh sorry sir, your new car doesn't come with that feature, even though it was clearly listed in the brochure as being standard specification. Oh well, never mind...."

Great - more people to irritate the hell out of you in the dealership. I too struggle to understand how the job spec differs from a sales person... In my job we have specialists to support us when it comes to providing / designing specific technical detail. Different kind of selling though.

The sales staff know next to nothing about all the various options eg what the various phone connectivity packages do.
X 2. They're trying to sell you something they seem to know bugger all about most of the time.

I might apply. It is always infuriating when you find your salesperson has absolutely no idea about platform derivation and innovations.

It isn't that badly paid that you only get monkeys, is it?

*Waits to be disillusioned. :(

Basic salary for most car sales people is very low - they make the majority of their money off commission for selling the cars I believe. Stands to reason that they should know a huge amount about their product... But as we all know there are lots and lots of options over a huge model range, and of course they don't just sell new, so there is even more to know. They should give each sales person an iPad mini with an app on it that allows them to access specs for the last 10 years, and the exact spec for the car they are trying to sell. I wouldn't mind if they had to check to ensure they knew what they were selling me, or what I wanted to buy. Be a damn sight cheaper than 600 full time staff I bet.

Beg to differ. Sales people are there to sell and tend to have lots of motherhood statements, but little real technical detail about the cars. Constant changes, so many combinatoins and sheer amount of technology means they may be able to demostrate stuff, but not know much of the finer detail.

Same as they have specilaist to handle the finance I see no reason not to have specilaists if you want specifics.

If you go to a Jag dealer they have sessions with people from the factory who will take you through things you'd never even believe are available to with the technology.

I agree they don't need to commit it all to memory but have access to the info when selling. Instead my experience was that when they didn't know the answer they would just BS and you were better off checking out the options on the bmw Internet site when you got home

beg to totally agree with you here cj
That is absolutely my experience and I look forward to my Dealer getting one so I can finally find out what and how Extended Bluetooth is and does or should do ....

ps Apple genius are a superb example of how it should work

Even better BMW contract apple to rebuild the I drive for them and make it user friendly. Why does an iPad cost £500 but the I drive north of 2,500?

Have to say though, the salesman I dealt when buying the Z4 and at the handover was excellent. He talked me through all the cars features in simple terms and connected my iPhone up as we sat and went through the controls. I don't think I would want some geek boring me to death and over prolonging the process more than necessary.

I bought my car in Devon as the dealer knew his stuff. Tried 2 in Surrey they knew less than I did. Would have appreciated half hour with genious telling me which options to tick though and which phone leads etc I needed. Managed to get them to throw in a Y lead for free only to realise the apple lead works better anyway.

Still don't know what hill start is maybe its because mine is auto box.

Don't know how similar the auto boxes are, but on my auto e85 it works on reasonably steep gradients by holding the car when you take your foot off the brake after stopping, even though the box is still in Drive. I thought it was only supposed to hold the car for only a few seconds, but it'll sit there as long as I like. Maybe on the manual it is just designed to hold it long enough for you to get sorted on the clutch and throttle without rolling back :?

Sorry, I meant to say that in D it does not move forwards on steep gradients, it holds it without the brake - bit of a blonde moment there, as it will of course never go back in D

On a shallow gradient mine will creep forward without the brake applied.
