BMW Fuel Flap Open - E89 & E90

My partner mentioned that she noticed the fuel flap opened on the E89.

I rushed out to check because I previously noticed the same on the E90.

I had wondered if someone was stealing fuel or something.

Low and behold, both cars have the fuel flap open. The only way to shut them was to start the car and manually close.

It's about 4.5 celcius outside at the moment (around 11.30pm) but would have been about 9-12 celcius earlier.

Would this be temperature related or something else?

Sadly I think it is something else. The filler flap should be locked when the car is.

I just went out and checked my E90 and E86 and neither of them would open (it's about 7 degrees C here).

Have you filled them both up recently?
Possibly coincidence that you didn't quite push it closed far enough. Then when the locking pin comes across, instead of engaging, it pushes the flap open.
