BMW extended Warranty - Not covering a broken coil spring

Evening All,

I had my BMW in for another issue (which has since been described to me a characteristic of the N52 engine and not a problem... Anyway following that prognosis they informed me that a rear coil spring has snapped.

I told them I have fully Comp extended warranty and that it will cover springs, they call me back and say that they are classifying it as a wear and tear issue? I cannot believe that a snapped spring is being classified as this? Also they want £190 to change just one spring!

I've told them to get in touch with the warranty company (formerly Mondial I think), but I am concerned... has anyone else had this problem with the extended warranty? I was hoping if I went in with a print out with loads of people saying that their extended cover covered the springs then I may have some hope!

Regards

I'm guessing you first issue is a tapperty engine on startup.

Regarding the springs, what mileage are you on?

I'm not aware of people having issues getting these replaced under warranty, but age and mileage have to come into it at some point I guess.

The engine issue is a whining sound which rises with rpm. I had an idler pulley and the alternator replaced earlier this year but the sound is still there. They tell me that they have compared with a 3 series with the sane engine and it makes the same sound.

Well I guess the car is 6 years old now and has done 65k miles... but what's the point in a warranty if they start to blame everything on wear and tear...

I had AUC and then Mondial warranty on mine until just over 100k miles, and whilst I agree with you to an extent, at what point do you agree that wear & tear becomes a valid excuse?

There are clear break points in the Mondial warranty literature, and it makes it clear that before 60k miles you'll get almost everything covered (except for electrical & seals). At 60k plus the list of parts covered reduces (covers major items like gearbox, diff, etc), and at 100k you get almost nothing covered and hence it's not worth it.

I've not had a spring break on mine, but I did a preventative change at about 70k miles.

Can anyone recommend the best place to get a replacement spring? I'd rather change it myself than spend £190 getting it done at the dealership.

I would change both the rear springs at the same time, otherwise the handling could be effected.

Sadly you're unlikely to ever win a broken spring case under warranty, unless you can prove the spring is less than 2 years old

I bought a spring and took it to my local tyre place as I was getting the rear tyres changed and asked the guy if he would change the spring, I think he charged £25, this was about 5 years ago and I had used this place for all my tyre changes.

Suplex for the springs and 40 mins of your time to fit them. It really is an easy job. If you can take your wheel off and undo 1 by then you can change the spring.

Maybe it ought to be covered but that's a different story.

Cheers Guys, yeah I replaced them on my old z4 convertible years ago so don't mind doing them myself. Its always worth a little battle to see if I can claim under warranty. On the plus side I have a little 1 series for the weekend so I can save a few miles on the coupe.

Not won over my the looks of the 1series but as a package is pretty Good in 120d guise.

Morning,

Yeah I tried with BMW but they said had the car got 50K miles or less on the clock then they would have done it. That said I still would have chosen to do it on my own because I have £100 excess on the warranty, so rather than paying £100 for a single spring I may as well get two springs and fit them myself for similar money.

Has anyone got the link to the suplex website? cant seem to find anything obvious on google?

My engine makes the same noise. I started hunting for the power steering reservoir as it sounded like the power steering pump then realised it has the electronic steering!!!

A mate of mine suggested water pump bearing?!?

Anyone else got the same noise?
