My main concern is absolutely no one locally to even attempt looking at a roof issue
Keep the money and invest it in a cheap flight ticket to Glasgow. On that trip all potential and expectable roof issues should be solved in one shot for the next years. :D

Now that sounds like a plan

I’m an advocate for the BMW extended warranty, with cars being so complex and expensive to repair/resolve issues to me it just makes sense and from personal experience has more than paid for itself.

In the last two years of e89 ownership (and warranty payments) I have had the following sorted under warranty:

Steering rack
Rear differential
Automatic gearbox
Hydraulic roof motor
Paddle shifters

Then over the Christmas break the dreaded chime sounded and the roof drop button flashed red and the roof wouldn’t go up or down. Into the dealers and the diagnosis - a micro switch failure due to water ingress from a blown rubber seal - Ok so I need to pay for the rubber seal as it comes under “trim” which is not covered however the icing on the cake is at the same time one of the techs spotted a leaking oil filter housing that had cracked so will sort that via warranty too (circa £500 alone) !!

That little lot has to have cost North of £8,000, yet my outlay for the period has been £1,300 for monthly warranty payments, plus two £100 excesses and £154 for the rubber seal - just under £1,700 for what would have been upwards of £8,000+ costs...

I guess it helps that I have a really good and supportive dealership too.

Ugh.
How much kilometers did you make with your 3.0i? I assume it's from 2011.
From my experience, that huge list of problems is not the standard for these models.

In my book this car would be classed as a lemon! Certainly not normal to have so many large expensive items failing unless of course you've been to the moon and back.

My view remains, if you can afford to underwrite any insurance your self, then it should turn out cheaper in the long run.

Tell me about it, it’s been a learning experience for sure! On the plus side it’s slowly becoming less of a lemon, as parts get replaced, besides the warranty stuff it’s had new front and rear windscreens (cracks) and due to two non fault accidents, most of the panels have been replaced and resprayed!! My wife refers to my car as Triggers broom as their is not much of the original car left.

Also just ordered some 437M’s and fitting them out with Goodyear Eagles so will be nice to finally come off the RFT’s.

Bizarrely it has full main dealer service history and only done 50K in its 10 year life so perhaps I’ve just been unlucky? Either way the warranty has been a financial life saver!

Blimey it get's worse, definitely a lemon and or unlucky car I would say. Me personally would probably have got shot of that car long ago. I have the same model but have only had it 7 months and its been a peach! Also I have all the previous repair invoices and in the car's 10 years the only thing done apart from normal servicing is something to do with the idrive which cost about 1000 GBP, but that is it, mine has now covered 37000 miles. Hopefully yours will now have calmed down and be good

Just renewed on my 35iS. So far, am £2,250 ahead and, bearing in mind the cost of the parts that may fail, it would be foolish not to.

Just to muddy the waters a bit - I’ve also got a 335xd and think it’s equally a complex apart from the roof!
If my logic about a warranty applies to the 35is it also applies to 335?

I have warranty on both cars and it’s £850 a year!

Really an interesting view: in Germany we don't know any kind of long term warranties. Only the first 2 years by the manufacturer, later on let's say up to 5 years a commecial add on.

Are there no restrictions on your warranties regarding the age, max. kilometers or required services?

They are more insurance policies than warranties or "Insurance backed warranties"

I agree, especially if you are handy with spanners.

I have warranty on both of mine too. A Z4 35is and a 535 MSport. Both fully toyed up. Costs me £140 per month for the two of them (£50pm on the Z4 and a whopping £90pm on the 535) with £100 excess on each.

Yeah I know that's a lot of money. But so is a replacement gearbox, HUD, cylinder head.... This is my third year of extended warranty on the 535 and I have as yet not made a claim. I toyed with getting rid of the 535 and getting soemthing newer and inside BMW's AUC warranty. But such a replacement vehicle will require a cash injection of at least £15000 plus my own, already immaculate, car. That £15k will depreciate away to nothing in a year or two. Looked at it like that, £1500 per year to extend the warranty on both cars makes sense, especially when I need them for business mileage as well.

You just have to weigh this up in accordance with your own circumstances.

Both my cars have lost a lot and as neither have many miles (11k z4 and 23k 335) the £425 each seems to be a good bet considering they both have BMW assist for U.K. and Europe.

It does not say a lot for BMW build quality ,after all these are not super cars that people feel the need to buy expensive warranties with such low mileage cars. Its about time the company started to have more faith in their product with warranties like companies from the Far East.
