I wouldnt really call the old X1 an SUV of any kind, the new one sure, the old one was just a 1 series estate really..
 
Judging by my neighbours, Audi Q3's seem remarkably popular as are volvo XC90s. I'd estimate half the home have some form of small SUV on their drive.

I too will change our runaround for something more comfortable and spacious this year, I originally considered an S4 avant or S5 sportback but, the lure of something with some 4wd capability and a elevated view of the road is something both I and my wife are keen on. Will need to drive the XC60/Q5/Kuga/X3 or X5 (although the E70 looks large).
