Does anyone know why this is so much? I have an old, underpowered box standard 316ti SE (compact) from 2001 and the cheapest quotes I'm getting are £650 for 3k miles a year with my mum and dad on it!!

I can insure an 840Ci with everything else the same for £450! (yes I know classic but still). When you factor in tax (Group H @ £195 pa) it begins to rack up the running costs for a town runabout!

I may have to dump the compact in favour of a small petrol auto 5 door like the Seat Mii / Skoda Citigo / VW Up / Toyota Aygo.. or a small mpv with a small engine Nissan Note or a small family hatch Kia Cee'd

I dont really want to spend more than £5k..

I literally use it for 1 mile trips here and there mainly with the occasional furniture transportation here and there.

You guys!

Jamie I wish but I dont want to ruin my lovely 3 litre on that ..

Ruby no that only applies to the zed

Out of interest, what are your quotes on small cars like the skodas, VWs, etc?

Road tax on the 840 would only be about £50 more too  fuel economy would be halved at best though

The cheapest insurance I can get on a city car (the Seat Mii is the cheapest of the 3) or any car for that matter! is £333 with
3000 miles a year,
mum and dad on the policy,
parked on the drive,
social and commuting (price in negligible)

I dont have any NCB for a 2nd car as its being used on the zed but I am on multi-car so that may make a little difference come the time I actually call admiral.

According to the Car Insurance Post Code Ratings : http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

I live in band E :headbang: which is the 2nd highest! Added to the fact im still relatively young (28) means the insurance will never come under £320 for me..

However having said that insurance group 14 cars (Note and Civic) are coming up with the same policies at £500 but then of course the tax goes up to £120-£195 bringing the overall running costs up.

The running costs I calculate at :
£1700 pa (Toyota Aygo) with £4500 initial spend
£1900 pa (Seat Mii) with £8000 initial spend
£2300 pa (Nissan Note) with £3500 initial spend
£2300 pa (E46 Compact) with 0 initial spend (as I already own it but I would classify this as £1700 value)

So I wouldnt say its a massive difference but its a decision of whether I need a mini-mpv like the Note which is more practical and may come in handy now and again or just the city car run around but the initial spend will be much higher..

Here is my shortlist of vehicles thus far:
